Investors. People who had already lost enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my father stole it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say stole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou implied it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said he used it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Lake Ridge?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard thought of the trust.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement reserve.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin\u2019s later payments.<\/p>\n<p>Celia\u2019s records.<\/p>\n<p>It was plausible enough to hurt.<\/p>\n<p>That was Martin\u2019s talent.<\/p>\n<p>He did not begin with impossible lies.<\/p>\n<p>He started with a street.<\/p>\n<p>Martin ran.<\/p>\n<p>Not toward his car.<\/p>\n<p>Across Leonard\u2019s side yard.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard unlocked the door instinctively.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped with his hand on the knob.<\/p>\n<p>Do not improvise.<\/p>\n<p>He remained inside.<\/p>\n<p>Reed\u2019s cruiser stopped hard at the curb.<\/p>\n<p>Two deputies moved around the house.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard opened the door only after Reed reached the porch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe went east through the yard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArmed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t see one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard handed him the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything\u2019s recorded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed listened to several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had Everett\u2019s letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe claimed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed looked toward the darkness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin said to ask Gloria about the night Celia died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he say why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Within fifteen minutes deputies found Martin\u2019s vehicle parked two streets away.<\/p>\n<p>Martin was gone.<\/p>\n<p>The car contained nothing obviously illegal.<\/p>\n<p>No envelope.<\/p>\n<p>No computer.<\/p>\n<p>No weapon.<\/p>\n<p>But a second phone was found beneath the passenger seat.<\/p>\n<p>Reed took it.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard remained on the looked toward Martin\u2019s abandoned vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you think he meant about Celia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll ask retirement.<\/p>\n<p>Years on the road.<\/p>\n<p>The worn suspension in his truck.<\/p>\n<p>Every winter morning spent securing frozen chains.<\/p>\n<p>Then he thought of Gloria\u2019s Security called Anna.
