could.”

Leonard felt anger surge.

“You stole it from my office.”

“Yes.”

“And now you want credit for stealing it better?”

“Leonard, listen.”

“I am.”

“There’s writing on the back.”

Leonard frowned.

“What writing?”

“Your father added something.”

“I’ve seen that letter a hundred times.”

“You never took it out of the plastic sleeve.”

Leonard said nothing.

That was true.

Everett’s note had been preserved between clear sheets for years.

Dale continued.

“There’s writing on the back.”

“What does it say?”

“I’m not reading it over the phone.”

“Take a picture.”

“No.”

“Then give it to Reed.”

“I need you to see it first.”

“Why?”

“Because it says Gloria’s name.”

Leonard’s anger vanished.

“What?”

“And Celia.”

He gripped the counter.

“What does it say?”

Dale lowered his voice.

“Meet me and I’ll show you.”

Leonard knew the correct choice.

Call Reed.

Stay home.

Do not confront.

Do not improvise.

Every professional in his life had repeated some version of those instructions.

He also knew Dale was frightened enough to run.

If Leonard refused, Dale might disappear again.

Or Martin might reach him first.

Leonard looked at the dark kitchen window.

For thirty-eight years, he had confused taking control with solving problems.

This time, control meant doing the opposite of impulse.

“Stay where you are,” Leonard said.

“No police.”

“I’m not agreeing to that.”

“Then forget it.”

“Dale.”

“I mean it.”

The line went dead.

Leonard immediately called Reed.

He told him everything.

The feed mill.

The papers.

The letter.

Erin.

Stonebridge.

Reed swore once, quietly.

“Do not go there.”

“I know.”

“You sound like you’re going.”

“I’m not.”

“Leonard.”

“I said I’m not.”

For once, he meant it.

Reed mobilized deputies.

Leonard remained home.

Ten minutes passed.

Twenty.

Thirty.

At 8:29, Gloria called from the hotel.

“Dale called me.”

Leonard stood.

“When?”

“Just now.”

“What did he say?”

“He wants me to come to the feed mill.”

Leonard’s blood went cold.

“Did you tell him where you are?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“He said you’re already there.”

Leonard stared toward the window.

“I’m home.”

Gloria went silent.

Then both understood.

The message had not been for Dale.

It had been for her.

Someone wanted Gloria to believe Leonard was meeting Dale secretly.

Someone wanted her out of the hotel.

“Lock your door,” Leonard said.

“It is.”

“Call Reed.”

“I will.”

“Do not leave.”

“I won’t.”

The phone call ended.

Leonard stood in the center of the kitchen.

Then headlights swept across his front window.

A vehicle stopped outside.

Leonard did not move.

Someone knocked.

Three times.

Slowly.

Leonard looked toward the door.

His phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number.

You want the truth? Open the door.

Leonard stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

Everett’s missing letter.

Turned over.

On the back, in his father’s handwriting, were six words:

Celia knows where Gloria’s copy is.

Leonard looked toward the door.

The knocking came again.

And this time a voice followed.

Martin Keene said, “Leonard, we need to finish this.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: Martin Came to Leonard’s Door Carrying Everett’s Letter, but the Truth He Offered Was Designed to Divide Leonard and Gloria Again

The MARTIN folder was thickest.
