her.

He did not know.

So he refused to invent an answer.

“I don’t know.”

Gloria nodded.

Strangely, she seemed relieved.

Leonard looked toward Maria’s porch.

“Tell Reed tonight.”

“I will.”

“And Anna.”

“I will.”

He started toward his truck.

“Leonard.”

He turned.

“Why didn’t you ask me to come home?”

He stared at her.

“Would you?”

“No.”

“Then that’s why.”

Gloria nodded.

Another honest answer.

Leonard drove away.

At the first stop sign, his phone rang.

Reed.

“We found the document Gloria signed.”

Leonard pulled over.

“What is it?”

“A transfer.”

“Of Calvin’s debt?”

“Yes.”

“To who?”

Reed paused.

“North Creek.”

Leonard frowned.

“But Gloria already became trustee of North Creek.”

“Exactly.”

“So she transferred Calvin’s personal claim against Dale into a company she controlled.”

“On paper.”

“And then?”

“Three weeks later, the debt was marked satisfied.”

Leonard’s hand tightened around the phone.

“How?”

“A payment was recorded.”

“From Dale?”

“No.”

“Who?”

Reed’s voice became very quiet.

“From your father’s old settlement fund.”

Leonard stared through the windshield.

“My father was dead.”

“Yes.”

“That fund was closed.”

“It should have been.”

Leonard felt something inside the entire story finally lock into place.

This was not merely about taking Gloria’s share of a house.

Not merely about Dale’s debt.

Not merely about Martin’s resentment.

Someone had been recycling old money, old claims, dead people’s accounts, abandoned companies, and family signatures.

The marriage crisis had been smoke.

The financial machinery underneath it had been running much longer.

And somehow, Leonard’s father’s money had never stopped moving.
