sure?”

“Yes.”

“Can someone transfer the house with that?”

“No. Not easily.”

“Then why take it?”

Natalie went quiet.

When she answered, her voice was different.

“Because the document itself may not be what they wanted.”

“What do you mean?”

“Was anything else in that envelope?”

Leonard pictured it.

Cream-colored papers.

County stamps.

A survey map.

Then he remembered.

“There was a letter.”

“From whom?”

“My father.”

“What kind of letter?”

Leonard stood.

His father had written it when Leonard bought the property shortly before marrying Gloria.

A short statement explaining that the down payment came from family money.

Leonard had kept it for sentimental reasons.

Natalie understood immediately.

“That letter could matter in determining whether part of the home began as separate property.”

Leonard stared at the empty cabinet.

“So Dale took the one document that could support me.”

“Maybe.”

“But how would he know?”

Natalie paused.

“That’s the question.”

Leonard looked again at the missing space.

Dale had not rummaged randomly.

Someone had known exactly what the file contained.

And only a handful of people had ever seen it.

One of them was Gloria.

Another had been Leonard’s father.

The third was a man Leonard had not thought about in years.

Their old family attorney.

The same attorney who had once employed Martin Keene as a records runner.

<a
