He would have heard them as a challenge and pushed until he won.<\/p>\n<p>Instead he looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria\u2019s face changed slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps because she believed him.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps because neither of them knew what winning would look like anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Alvarez stood near the parking lot several yards away. She had come to the courthouse after providing her statement and now waited awkwardly, unsure whether she belonged beside Leonard or Gloria.<\/p>\n<p>The cracked suitcase rested between them.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria put one hand inside her purse.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard thought she might hide the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>Instead she removed it.<\/p>\n<p>The yellow cover was bent at the corners from weeks of use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did Dale write?\u201d Leonard asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did he tell you to write?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you keep it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed to remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember what happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes lifted toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I was supposed to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The admission was quieter than Leonard expected.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria opened the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>Pages fluttered in the wind.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard saw his name repeatedly. Dates. Times. Phrases. Reminders.<\/p>\n<p>Some entries were descriptions of real arguments stripped of context. Others recorded incidents that could not have happened. Several appeared to be instructions rather than memories.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard suddenly understood why Gloria had always resisted letting him read beyond a few pages.<\/p>\n<p>The notebook was not simply a diary.<\/p>\n<p>It was partly a script.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale gave you these phrases?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said details make people believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard looked toward the courthouse doors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he tell you to use the shelter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me they would explain what paperwork mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid they tell you to lie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard believed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mrs. Alvarez?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen this was Dale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria tightened her grip on the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria looked almost irritated that he had not argued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did it too,\u201d she repeated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want everything to be Dale\u2019s fault.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hated him before this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t trust him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought he was worthless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe tried to get me to guarantee money for a business he couldn\u2019t pay for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou humiliated him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI refused him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did it in front of everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Celia had still been alive then. Several relatives had been at the house. Dale had produced paperwork at the kitchen table and expected Leonard to sign it.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard had refused loudly.<\/p>\n<p>He had enjoyed refusing.<\/p>\n<p>That was the part he had never admitted.<\/p>\n<p>Dale had been irresponsible, but Leonard had used the opportunity to establish who controlled the money and whose judgment mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could have handled that better,\u201d Leonard said.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria gave a tired laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always understand things ten years late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised her.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard looked at the courthouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did Dale come back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria closed the notebook halfway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe called after Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe needed money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you give him any?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes it matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it came from our account, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria\u2019s eyes hardened.<\/p>\n<p>There it was again\u2014the old marriage trying to resurrect itself in a courthouse parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard could hear himself preparing the familiar lecture about money.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cNot today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria studied him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale knew I was thinking about leaving,\u201d she said eventually. \u201cI told him things weren\u2019t good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell him about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you were never home. That when you were home, everything had to be your way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him you controlled the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him you said I wouldn\u2019t get the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him sometimes I was afraid to make you angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can be true too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you doing this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause April 8 wasn\u2019t true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause saying I was difficult to live with isn\u2019t the same as saying I committed things I didn\u2019t commit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought nobody would care otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI care now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word hurt to say.<\/p>\n<p>It was still necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard had spent most of his adult life thinking responsibility meant paying for things. Mortgage paid? Responsible. Electricity on? Responsible. Wife had a car? Responsible.<\/p>\n<p>He had never understood how conveniently that definition excluded listening.<\/p>\n<p>But Gloria had crossed a line of her own.<\/p>\n<p>Pain could explain what she had done.<\/p>\n<p>It could not make false accusations true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should have left me,\u201d Leonard said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You talked about leaving. Then I made it hard, and you stayed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat difference does that make?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA big one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou would have fought me over everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe savings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou would have made me prove what I deserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard looked down at the courthouse steps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI probably would have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Dale was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria\u2019s head snapped up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was right that I might have been ugly during a divorce. He wasn\u2019t right that you needed to invent crimes to win one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria pressed her lips together.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard pointed toward the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have written what actually happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody would have cared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s easy for you to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward Mrs. Alvarez.<\/p>\n<p>Maria pretended not to be watching.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were unhappy. You were lonely. I used money like it gave me more votes in the marriage. I disappeared into work because being on the road was easier than coming home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never said that before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m saying it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you won.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t anything here that looks like winning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The wind lifted another page.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria caught it with her thumb.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard noticed the pressure marks on the paper near the back of the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s on the last page?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>They both recognized the answer.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The same word Gloria had used when he first discovered the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGloria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her shoulders dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly, she turned toward the final page.<\/p>\n<p>Several lines had been crossed out so aggressively that the pen had nearly cut through the paper.<\/p>\n<p>At the top was that day\u2019s date.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard read downward.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the first sentences were incomplete. Instructions had been started, rejected, and rewritten.<\/p>\n<p>Then he reached the final surviving line.<\/p>\n<p>If Leonard says he wants a divorce, cry and tell Mrs. Alvarez he threatened me.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>He felt no sudden rage.<\/p>\n<p>That frightened him more than anger would have.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Gloria.<\/p>\n<p>She closed the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>Neither spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Alvarez remained near the parking lot, exactly where the instruction had imagined she might be.<\/p>\n<p>The plan had extended beyond the hearing.<\/p>\n<p>If Leonard announced the divorce, Gloria had been prepared to create another accusation.<\/p>\n<p>Another witness.<\/p>\n<p>Another entry.<\/p>\n<p>Another piece of paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you going to do this?\u201d Leonard asked.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria\u2019s chin trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what I would have done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDale wrote it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me what to write.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you wrote it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard looked toward the courthouse doors.<\/p>\n<p>He thought of Sergeant Reed.<\/p>\n<p>The documents were already under review. Dale had disappeared. The protection-order request had collapsed under dates that could be checked.<\/p>\n<p>But this page was different.<\/p>\n<p>It demonstrated intent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me the notebook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria pulled it against her chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt needs to go to Reed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve already destroyed everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t create those pages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou destroyed my chance to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard heard firmness returning to his own voice and deliberately lowered it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can still leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll settle it legally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll take the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I always pretended I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard extended his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe notebook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to take it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has my name in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has my life in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has things that never happened in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers tightened around the cover.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard could have grabbed it.<\/p>\n<p>The old impulse was there.<\/p>\n<p>Take control.<\/p>\n<p>End the argument.<\/p>\n<p>Decide.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he lowered his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive it to the sheriff yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want me to walk in there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd tell them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could ask them not to do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere. That\u2019s you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard nodded toward the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019m not going to lie for you either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria turned away.<\/p>\n<p>For a long moment, Leonard thought she might leave.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mrs. Alvarez approached.<\/p>\n<p>Maria reached for the handle of Gloria\u2019s suitcase. The damaged wheel clicked as she pulled it closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome on,\u201d Maria said softly.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still want to help me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maria\u2019s expression was sad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelping you doesn\u2019t mean saying something happened when it didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard realized Maria had reached the same boundary he had.<\/p>\n<p>Compassion did not require participation in a lie.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria opened the notebook again.<\/p>\n<p>She stared at the final page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really was afraid of you sometimes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why does none of this count?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt counts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed toward the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat counts too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard did not tell her to stop.<\/p>\n<p>He did not comfort her either.<\/p>\n<p>For thirty-eight years, he had believed there were only two choices during conflict: win or surrender.<\/p>\n<p>Standing outside the courthouse, he discovered a third.<\/p>\n<p>Tell the truth and allow the consequences to belong to everyone involved.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria held the notebook out.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard took it.<\/p>\n<p>She did not release it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds they both held the yellow pad between them.<\/p>\n<p>Then Gloria let go.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard opened once more to the last page.<\/p>\n<p>The sentence was still there.<\/p>\n<p>If Leonard says he wants a divorce, cry and tell Mrs. Alvarez he threatened me.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Gloria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do want a divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Alvarez moved closer but said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m not going to lie about why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard turned toward the courthouse.<\/p>\n<p>Every step felt heavier than the last.<\/p>\n<p>He found Sergeant Reed and handed him the original notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s another page you need to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard waited.<\/p>\n<p>When Reed reached the final entry, his expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>He asked Leonard whether he wanted to add another statement.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard said yes.<\/p>\n<p>He described finding the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>He described the false dates.<\/p>\n<p>He described Dale.<\/p>\n<p>He described his own marriage as accurately as he could, including the parts that did not make him look good.<\/p>\n<p>When he finished, he walked outside again.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Alvarez had taken her and the broken suitcase toward the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard stood alone on the courthouse steps.<\/p>\n<p>He did not know whether Gloria would stay at a motel, return to Maria\u2019s house, or eventually seek help somewhere else.<\/p>\n<p>He did know she would not return home as his wife.<\/p>\n<p>By evening, Leonard was back at the house.<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen looked almost exactly as it had when he arrived nine months and six days after leaving.<\/p>\n<p>There was the table.<\/p>\n<p>There were his keys.<\/p>\n<p>There was the refrigerator humming in the corner.<\/p>\n<p>But the yellow notebook was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard picked up his blue travel mug.<\/p>\n<p>The coffee Gloria had prepared that first morning was long gone, but a faint brown ring remained inside the lid.<\/p>\n<p>He washed it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Then he sat at the kitchen table in the silence he had spent decades creating.<\/p>\n<p>For once, he did not use that silence against anyone.<\/p>\n<p>He simply listened to it.<\/p>\n<p>And understood that the next thing he said\u2014to Gloria, to a lawyer, to the sheriff, or to himself\u2014would have to be true.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=30369\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Gloria\u2019s First Night Away Brought a Call Leonard Expected, but the Voice on the Line Belonged to Someone Else<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leonard looked at the yellow edge of the notebook sticking from Gloria\u2019s purse. \u201cGive me the pad.\u201d Gloria immediately pulled her purse closer. \u201cNo.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s evidence now.\u201d \u201cYou already have &hellip;
