hesitated.

“One.”

“Who?”

“A son.”

Teresa froze.

“My half-brother.”

“Possibly.”

“Where is he?”

“New Mexico.”

“Name?”

Celeste told her.

Javier Serrano.

Teresa grabbed her phone immediately.

Daniel stopped her.

“Wait.”

She glared.

“No more waiting.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

He held her gaze.

“But don’t call a stranger and tell him his dead father may have another daughter before we verify anything.”

Teresa’s anger remained.

But she knew he was right.

Paola touched her mother’s arm.

“We test.”

Teresa nodded once.

“Fine.”

Celeste opened another folder.

“I already contacted Javier after the investigation started.”

Teresa stared.

“What?”

“He agreed to provide DNA.”

“When?”

“Two days ago.”

“You keep doing this.”

“I know.”

“You keep deciding first.”

“I know.”

Teresa looked exhausted.

“When do results come?”

Celeste hesitated.

“Today.”

That was why she had called us to Mercer.

Not only the fund.

Not only the letter.

She had been waiting.

As if summoned, her phone vibrated.

Email.

She opened it.

Nobody spoke.

Her eyes moved across the screen.

Then she looked at Teresa.

“What?”

Teresa asked.

Celeste’s expression softened.

“Javier is your half-brother.”

Teresa sat down.

Paola caught her hand.

The DNA relationship probability was overwhelming.

Shared biological father.

Mateo Serrano.

Not Gabriel.

The revelation changed less than I expected.

Teresa was still Teresa.

Still Emma’s daughter.

Still Paola’s mother.

Still connected to Gabriel through loss, secrecy, and his failure to tell the truth.

But one myth fell away.

Gabriel had not fathered Camila.

He had simply believed he might have.

That made his choices no less consequential.

Only differently motivated.

Teresa stared at the lake.

“So Daniel and I…”

“Still not biological siblings,” I said.

She laughed through tears.

“No.”

Daniel sat beside her.

“But inconvenient siblings?”

She looked at him.

“That offer still open?”

“Yes.”

“Then yes.”

They sat together quietly.

Later, investigators arrived for Gabriel’s ledgers.

Celeste surrendered everything.

Before they left, she handed Teresa one final item.

A photograph.

Mateo Serrano at twenty.

Dark-haired.

Thin.

Smiling.

Teresa looked at it for a long time.

“I have his mouth.”

She did.

Undeniably.

Then Daniel noticed something written on the back.

A date.

The day before Camila was born.

And one line:

Tell Emma I never left by choice.

Teresa pressed the photograph against her chest.

Behind us, Paola’s phone rang.

Hospital.

Her doctor.

She answered.

Her face changed.

Daniel stood instantly.

“What?”

Paola listened.

Then smiled through sudden tears.

“The baby’s screening came back normal.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Relief moved through everyone.

The unborn child had carried the weight of generations without knowing.

Now, at least medically, one fear could finally be put down.

Daniel hugged Paola.

This time there was no hesitation.

No careful distance.

He kissed her forehead.

Then looked at the wooden letters of history we had been carrying in our minds.

Emma.

Camila.

Teresa.

Mateo.

Daniel.

Names given.

Names stolen.

Names chosen.

Names recovered.

Paola touched her stomach.

“We need to talk about her name.”

Everyone went quiet.

Emma.

The original wound.

The reason any of this had surfaced.

She looked at me.

“I don’t think I can call her Emma anymore.”

I felt something loosen.

Not victory.

That would have been ugly.

Understanding.

“You don’t have to decide now.”

“I know.”

Then she looked toward Teresa’s photograph of Mateo Serrano.

“But I think she deserves a name that belongs to her.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 30:
