missing.

Everything else narrowed around that fact.

Andrew and I followed.

Celeste remained on the phone with the neighbor who had called her.

Police were already there.

When we arrived, the front door stood open.

One window beside the kitchen had been broken.

No blood visible.

No obvious struggle outside.

Paola ran followed.

“Someone left this on the kitchen table.”

Daniel read through the plastic.

VICTOR HAS THE WRONG LIST.

Underneath:

ASK HIM WHO HE’S Clara.”

Her face lost color.

Daniel looked at her.

Cole continued.

“I wondered when you’d stop hiding behind dead women.”

Marisol’s hand shook.

“You killed Keene.”

“Yes.”

The casual admission stunned everyone.

Perhaps he believed the call untraceable.

Perhaps he no longer cared.

“You tried to kill me,” Marisol said.

“No.”

“You followed me for it.”

“Clara does.”

“No.”

Cole laughed.

“She always lies when frightened.”

Marisol stepped closer to the moved it.”

“Where?”

“I won’t tell you.”

Paola’s voice broke.

“Then he’ll hurt my mother.”

Marisol turned toward her.

Pain crossed her face.

Cole heard.

“Exactly.”

Daniel looked at the detective.

The detective motioned to keep him talking.

“Why Teresa?” Daniel asked.

“Because everyone else suddenly has police nearby.”

“You could take me.”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“You’re useful where you are.”

“How?”

“Victor is more afraid of you than he is of me.”

That surprised everyone.

“Why?”

“Because you’re the one person who can expose what he protected without caring what happens to the Salcedo name.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“I don’t care about his name.”

“I know.”

“Then tell me what he’s protecting.”

Cole paused.

“Ask Victor.”

“He’s missing.”

Another pause.

That was new information to Cole.

“Missing?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then a curse.

The call ended.

Police lost the trace in seconds.

The detective looked at us.

“He didn’t know Salcedo was gone.”

Andrew nodded.

“So Victor ran from someone else.”

Or went somewhere intentionally.

Marisol looked at the note again.

Victor has the wrong list.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

I asked.

“Roberto made two lists.”

Nobody spoke.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“One index of illegal adoptions.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

She closed her eyes.

“A second list of people children.”

“Then Victor?”

“Probably the perpetrators.”

That explained everything.

Victor had spent years protecting not merely old crimes but living participants.

“What does ‘wrong list’ mean?” Daniel asked.

Marisol looked at him.

“Cole wants the children’s list.”

“Why?”

“To find people.”

“For what?”

“I don’t know.”

Money.

Blackmail.

Control.

Any possibility was ugly.

“And Victor is protecting the perpetrators hesitated.

“Arturo.”

“Obviously.”

“Rosa.”

“Roberto.”

“Yes.”

“Gabriel?”

Marisol looked at Daniel.

“Yes.”

He absorbed that without reaction.

“Who else?”

“People with power.”

“Specific.”

She lowered her voice.

“A state judge.”

“Dead?”

“I think so.”

“A hospital detectives.

“And?”

Marisol’s eyes shifted to the house.

“Victor.”

Silence.

Not inherited guilt.

Direct involvement.

“What did he do?” I asked.

“He helped with placements when he was young.”

Daniel swore.

“So his whole ‘I inherited my father’s mess’ story was a lie.”

“Partly.”

“What else?”

Marisol took a breath.

“There was a woman on the first.”

“What does that mean?”

“After Keene died, I learned she worked for Victor.”

Our witness.

The woman who led us to the grave.

The woman who identified Celeste.

My stomach turned.

“She manipulated us.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To get you looking at Roberto instead of Victor.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“And the card?”

“She knew about the flowers?”

“Maybe.”

Celeste looked shocked.

“She could have replaced them.”

Marisol nodded.

That meant the signal that brought Marisol out of hiding might itself have been manufactured.

A trap.

“Why lure you back?” Paola asked.

“To find the list.”

Marisol looked at him?”

“No.”

“Safe?”

“We’re checking.”

Marisol suddenly whispered, “He went for Emma’s files.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Why now?”

“Because Cole is moving.”

“And Teresa?”

Paola interrupted.

“My mother is still missing.”

Her voice had become dangerously calm.

Every other mystery had to become secondary.

Daniel went to her.

“You’re right.”

He looked at the detective.

“What do we do?”

The answer was practical.

Wait for Cole to call.

Search known locations.

Trace financial and phone
