not remove evidence connected to an unsolved homicide.

So we left the clipping in place after photographing it.

We took Roberto’s letter only because it was addressed to Daniel be her.”

We parked near the entrance.

He got out.

Paola grabbed his hand through the open window.

“Come back out.”

He looked at her.

“I will.”

“I mean it.”

“I know.”

Then he walked toward the church.

We remained in the cars.

Twenty yards.

Maybe thirty.

Close enough to see the door.

Not close enough to hear.

Daniel entered.

Inside, the church was dim.

Later he told me exactly what happened.

A woman sat in the third pew.

Back straight.

Gray hair beneath a scarf.

Hands folded.

She did not turn immediately.

Daniel stood near the entrance.

“Clara?”

The woman’s shoulders moved.

Then she looked back.

He recognized her from the photographs.

Older.

Much older.

But Marisol.

Alive.

Daniel told me he forgot every question.

Every accusation.

Every prepared sentence.

She stood.

For several pew.

Marisol sat beside him.

Still no touching.

He asked why she disappeared thirteen years ago.

Her face changed.

“Thomas made no sense.

“We thought you had it.”

“I did.”

She explained.

Years earlier she had copied the index and returned the original to a hidden location Roberto specified.

Keene somehow discovered financial references connected to that cache.

He contacted Marisol under the name Clara.

He wanted to expose Victor.

“Why you?”

“Because he knew I had survived the old network.”

“What happened?”

Marisol met him three times.

The fourth meeting was at the federal building.

Keene planned to hand over ledgers.

He never made it inside.

A man shot him in the parking garage.

Marisol saw the shooter.

“Who?”

She looked at Daniel.

“Not Victor.”

“Who?”

“A man named Adrian Cole.”

Daniel had never changed.”

“What does that mean?”

She explained that after Roberto died, she checked his grave once each year.

Not because she mourned him.

Because he
