Some weren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Teresa never knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Marisol now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid the card give any clue?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you keep it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste retrieved it.<\/p>\n<p>Original card.<\/p>\n<p>Same handwriting photographed at the cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel held it beside Marisol\u2019s old notebook.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting looked similar.<\/p>\n<p>Not identical.<\/p>\n<p>Age changed script.<\/p>\n<p>Illness changed it.<\/p>\n<p>But enough.<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be hers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the back of the card, faint pencil marks showed through.<\/p>\n<p>I almost missed them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held it toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>Numbers.<\/p>\n<p>A sequence.<\/p>\n<p>Three digits.<\/p>\n<p>Dash.<\/p>\n<p>Four digits.<\/p>\n<p>Paola frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhone number?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Too short.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew photographed it and enhanced contrast on his phone.<\/p>\n<p>The sequence became clearer.<\/p>\n<p>12-7-31.<\/p>\n<p>A date?<\/p>\n<p>December 7, 1931?<\/p>\n<p>Too early.<\/p>\n<p>July 12?<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be locker numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>Then froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took the card.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoberto used dates as codes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich date?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonth-day-year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is 12-7-31?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola suddenly spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma Rosa\u2019s birthday was December seventh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We all looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat year?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNineteen thirty-one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The code was Rosa\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoberto\u2019s old safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d Daniel asked.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste looked toward Paola.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRosa\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandmother\u2019s house was sold after she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA family friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Victor owned Rosa\u2019s old house.<\/p>\n<p>The house where Camila was raised.<\/p>\n<p>Where Marisol fought.<\/p>\n<p>Where Roberto kept secrets.<\/p>\n<p>Where the safe might still exist.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel took out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d Celeste asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo search Victor\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey won\u2019t get a warrant because of a birthday written on a card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He knew that.<\/p>\n<p>We all did.<\/p>\n<p>Paola looked at the card again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere might be another way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house wasn\u2019t sold directly to Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI handled Grandma\u2019s estate paperwork with Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt went into a family trust first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola\u2019s eyes sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI may still be a beneficiary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning Victor may own the property, but the trust kept access rights to the detached storage building for ten years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long ago did Rosa die?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can legally enter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need the trust papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola reached for her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStorage unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same unit where we found Camila\u2019s adoption papers.<\/p>\n<p>She called Teresa.<\/p>\n<p>Five minutes later, Teresa confirmed it.<\/p>\n<p>Paola was right.<\/p>\n<p>The family trust retained access to the detached storage structure.<\/p>\n<p>One more year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was stored there?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Teresa answered over speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOld furniture. Tools.
