wall.

“Someone took it.”

“Maybe Mom removed it,” Andrew said.

“No.”

Daniel pointed to the torn the truth.

Someone wanted us here.

Someone knew what remained.

Maybe they also knew what had been removed.

Paola crouched beside the cashbox.

“The tapes.”

We had almost forgotten them.

Two microcassettes.

Each labeled in my mother’s handwriting.

ONE.

TWO.

The recorder inside the box looked old but intact.

Andrew checked the batteries.

Dead.

The maintenance worker found replacements in a supply cabinet.

Daniel inserted the first tape.

We sat in a half circle on the concrete floor.

He pressed play.

Static.

Then my mother’s voice.

Older than in my memories of childhood.

Younger than at the end.

Steady.

“If you’re hearing this, I either lost my courage or ran out of time.”

Daniel shut his eyes.

The tape continued.

Mom said she had decided written records were not enough.

Too many people had changed stories.

Too many documents had vanished.

She wanted her own account in her own voice.

She named the date.

Six months before the wedding.

Before her meeting with Teresa outside the reception.

Before everything we thought had begun.

Mom said she knew Daniel was Marisol’s son.

She knew Gabriel had taken him.

She knew Teresa was Camila.

She knew Rosa and Arturo Salcedo had participated in illegal adoptions.

And she had discovered a fact that frightened her more than all of it.

Daniel leaned closer to the recorder.

Static crackled.

Mom continued.

“Gabriel is not Daniel’s biological father.”

The words landed cleanly.

Daniel did not move.

Paola whispered, “What?”

Mom’s recording continued.

She had tested DNA.

Not Gabriel directly.

He was dead by then.

But Celeste had agreed to provide a sample.

The half-sibling test showed no paternal match.

Daniel and Celeste did not share a father.

Daniel stared at the recorder.

“Then who?”

Mom answered.

“I know who Daniel’s father is.”

Static swallowed several seconds.

Then:

“Roberto Robles.”

Nobody breathed.

Paola stood abruptly.

“No.”

Daniel stared straight ahead.

Roberto.

Rosa’s husband.

Marisol’s stepfather.

The man who had helped carry her out of the motel.

The man who had claimed Daniel’s mother abandoned him.

The man whose grave someone still visited.

“No,” Paola repeated.

But the tape continued.

Mom said Marisol had eventually confessed.

Not willingly.

Emma confronted her after obtaining old correspondence.

Marisol admitted Roberto had assaulted her.

Years of grooming and coercion had culminated shortly before she conceived.

She did not know whether Gabriel or Roberto was the biological father at first.

Daniel’s face emptied.

There are revelations that produce anger.

This one produced silence.

Paola went to him.

He did not react when she took his hand.

Mom’s voice remained calm, but I heard strain beneath it.

Marisol had loved Gabriel.

She had hoped Daniel was Gabriel’s son.

Roberto knew the possibility existed that Daniel was his.

That was why he became so involved after the birth.

Not to protect the family.

To control evidence of what he had done.

I felt physically ill.

Every action rearranged itself.

Roberto helping remove Marisol.

Rosa allowing the baby to disappear.

Salcedo controlling documents.

Gabriel taking Daniel.

All of them had different motives.

Some overlapped.

Some conflicted.

But silence benefited them all.

Mom said she obtained biological material from Roberto’s archived medical records through a private investigator.

The test was informal.

Not legally admissible.

But conclusive enough for her.

Daniel and Roberto matched as father and son.

Daniel stood.

He walked out of the storage locker.

Paola followed.

We let them go.

Andrew stopped the tape.

For several minutes, I listened to water moving below the pavilion.

My brother had spent days learning one father was not his father.

Now he had discovered another man was.

A man who had harmed his mother.

I hated Roberto with a clarity I rarely felt toward the dead.

Andrew looked at me.

“Do you want to keep going?”

“Yes.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I do.”

He restarted the tape.

Mom said this was why she panicked at the wedding.

Not because Daniel had married a biological niece.

Her testing had already ruled that out.

The panic came because Teresa told her something else about Roberto.

A promise.

A final one.

Roberto had admitted shortly before his death that he knew where Marisol lived.

He had kept it secret from Salcedo.

Why?

Guilt.

Fear.

Or both.

He promised Marisol he would never reveal her location if she agreed never to expose the truth about Daniel’s paternity while Rosa remained alive.

A bargain between victim and abuser.

I wanted to throw the recorder into the lake.

Instead I listened.

Mom said she realized every generation had made promises on behalf of people who were never consulted.

Rosa promised silence.

Roberto promised protection.

Gabriel promised safety.

Marisol promised disappearance.

Emma had decided she would make no more promises for Daniel.

She would tell him.

Then the first tape ended.

I stared at the machine.

“She intended to tell him after the wedding.”

“Yes.”

Andrew inserted tape two.

My mother’s voice sounded weaker.

Later date.

After the wedding.

She said the ceremony changed everything because Teresa told her Victor Salcedo was still watching the family.

Not Arturo.

Victor.

His father was dying by then.

Victor had taken responsibility for keeping the old files contained.

He had visited Rosa.

Teresa knew.

Rosa feared him.

My mother said Victor had approached her after the wedding.

That detail had never surfaced.

Victor told Emma that revealing Daniel’s identity would reopen the adoption network.

He threatened not her.

Us.

Me.

Daniel.

Paola.

He claimed dozens of families had built lives on false records and would destroy anyone who threatened them.

I felt cold.

Mom did not believe all of it.

But she believed enough.

Then she said Victor knew about Daniel’s real paternity.

He knew Roberto was his father.

He knew Marisol survived.

He knew Celeste had copies.

And he knew Emma was collecting evidence.

Victor told her to stop.

She refused.

The tape crackled.

My mother laughed softly.

“I told him I had spent my whole life being told what truths were too dangerous for me.”

I closed my eyes.

That sounded like her.

Then came the part that explained the key.

Mom said Gabriel had hidden copies of Salcedo’s records at Mercer Pavilion years earlier.

He told her shortly before he died.

Storage 3.

She recovered them.

Some were still there.

Others she moved.

Where?

The tape did not say.

Mom said she had begun preparing packets for the state attorney general, a journalist, and several affected families.

Andrew leaned forward.

“She was going public.”

“Yes.”

Then the recording stopped abruptly.

Not ended.

Stopped.

A click.

Silence.

Then a different voice.

Male.

Near the recorder.

“You shouldn’t be doing this, Emma.”

My blood went cold.

Daniel and Paola had returned to the doorway.

They heard it too.

Mom replied, farther from the microphone.

“Get out of my house.”

The man spoke again.

“You don’t understand what you’ll destroy.”

“I understand exactly.”

“Daniel will hate you.”

“That’s his decision.”

“He’ll learn what Roberto did.”

“Yes.”

“Paola will learn who Teresa is.”

“Yes.”

“Lucia will learn what Gabriel did.”

“Yes.”

“You’ll burn every bridge.”

Mom answered:

“Then maybe they should burn.”

My throat tightened.

The man stepped closer.

Fabric rustled against the recorder.

“I’m asking once.”

“No.”

“Emma.”

“Victor, leave.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Victor.

His voice.

Younger, but unmistakably the same man we met.

The tape continued.

Victor told her to surrender the records.

Mom refused.

He threatened legal action.

Exposure.

Defamation.

Anything that might frighten her.

It did not.

Then he said:

“You think Celeste is on your side?”

Mom went quiet.

Victor continued.

“She gave us your address.”

We all looked at each other.

Celeste.

The woman holding copies.

The woman who gave Daniel Marisol’s letter.

The woman who claimed to be helping.

Mom asked, “Why?”

Victor laughed softly.

“Because Gabriel asked her to keep you from blowing up what he spent his life containing.”

The recording ended.

No farewell.

No explanation.

Just the mechanical snap of tape reaching its end.

Daniel took out his phone.

“I’m calling Celeste.”

“No,” Andrew said.

Daniel glared.

“Why?”

“Because if Victor was telling the truth, she may be the person who has been watching us.”

Paola looked at the anonymous text.

Then the photo left at Elvira’s house.

“She knew about Mercer Pavilion.”

I remembered Marisol’s letter.

Gabriel had hidden records “where Emma first said yes.”

Celeste had given us that letter.

She knew.

Daniel paced.

“But why help us at all?”

“Maybe she wants us to find some things and not others.”

I looked at the torn page.

Exactly.

Control the path.

Reveal enough.

Remove whatever mattered most.

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

All four of us stared.

A message appeared.

You found the tape.

Another arrived.

Now ask yourself why Victor wanted you to hear his own voice.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

The sender knew we were inside Storage 3.

Right now.

Andrew stood and scanned the pavilion.

Daniel ran outside.

I followed.

The parking lot contained six cars.

Our two.

A maintenance truck.

Three visitors’ vehicles.

Nobody obviously watching.

Daniel called the number.

No answer.

Then another message came.

Victor isn’t protecting the past.

He’s protecting someone alive.

Daniel typed:

WHO?

The response came thirty seconds later.

You already met her.

Paola whispered, “Celeste.”

I was not sure.

Another message appeared.

Ask Celeste why Marisol died six months after Emma found her.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“What?”

Marisol died of pancreatic cancer.

At least that was what Celeste told us.

Six months after Emma found her?

The timeline we had heard did not fit cleanly.

Daniel called Celeste anyway.

Straight to voicemail.

Again.

Voicemail.

Then I noticed movement across the lake.

A figure stood near the old boat launch.

Too far to identify.

Watching the pavilion.

“Daniel.”

He turned.

I pointed.

The figure walked toward a dark car.

Andrew was already taking photographs.

The car pulled away.

We could not see the plate.

Paola’s phone buzzed.

One final message.

Don’t chase me.

The next truth is in Emma’s autopsy.

Click here to continue reading: PART
