She learned the whole operation shortly before you were born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would your mother tell her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Elena was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf prison?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Salcedo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste\u2019s voice tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother believed he had already killed someone who tried to expose him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d Andrew asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA nurse from St. Agnes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The institution where Teresa\u2019s adoption began.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOfficially, a car accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnofficially?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had been collecting records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are those files?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer electrified the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of them?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything Elena saved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy keep them hidden?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Gabriel asked me to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGabriel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he want them preserved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe spent the last years of his life trying to undo what he helped create.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sounded impossible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never told Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never returned Marisol\u2019s son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never told Teresa who she was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what exactly did he undo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste did not defend him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at the photograph of Marisol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she hate him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came fast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe loved him too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked disgusted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth can exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood that more than I wanted to.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is something else you need to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She disappeared down the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>When she returned, she carried a sealed plastic sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was an envelope.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting belonged to Marisol.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel recognized it from the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>His name was written across the front.<\/p>\n<p>Not Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Mateo.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s knees seemed to weaken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas that for me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did she write it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree months before she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My brother stared at the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor how long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirteen years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you never looked for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI searched for Mateo Gabriel Robles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>His name had changed.<\/p>\n<p>His surname had changed.<\/p>\n<p>His identity had been erased before anyone could search.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste extended the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis belongs to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel reached for it.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to read it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since the revelations began, he reached for her hand voluntarily.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers closed around his.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel took the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>He turned it over.<\/p>\n<p>The seal was intact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she die from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPancreatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow old?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifty-two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew she was dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she know my name was Daniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That broke him more quietly than anything else had.<\/p>\n<p>Marisol died believing her son was still Mateo.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel pressed the envelope against his chest.<\/p>\n<p>Then his expression sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you keep your promises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe card at Roberto\u2019s grave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pulled the photograph of the note from my phone.<\/p>\n<p>I kept my promise. You kept yours.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRosa Mendez said Roberto\u2019s daughter leaves the flowers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who does?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste\u2019s eyes remained fixed on the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect us to believe that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked genuinely unsettled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoberto never acknowledged me as his daughter.
