You kept yours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat promise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rosa Mendez shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI truly don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Celeste?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe lives in San Antonio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman told us.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew searched.<\/p>\n<p>Several results.<\/p>\n<p>One image appeared.<\/p>\n<p>A woman in her early sixties standing at a charity event.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>I did too.<\/p>\n<p>The resemblance was not to Roberto.<\/p>\n<p>Not to Rosa.<\/p>\n<p>Not even to Marisol.<\/p>\n<p>It was to my father.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew looked up slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Unless Roberto\u2019s secret daughter was not Roberto\u2019s daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cGabriel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste had my father\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n<p>His mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Even the same asymmetry in the eyebrows.<\/p>\n<p>Paola stared at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf she\u2019s Gabriel\u2019s daughter\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Because the timeline suddenly became dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>If Celeste was our father\u2019s child with someone connected to Roberto, the network of betrayals extended even further back.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked again at the card on the grave.<\/p>\n<p>I kept my promise.
