then?”

“I told her I had known a Gabriel who was involved with Marisol.”

I could imagine my mother’s face.

Her son’s wedding.

Her missing letters.

Dozens.

Some unopened.

Most addressed only to Marisol.

Different handwriting.

Gabriel.

My father.

I picked up the earliest one.

The envelope had no stamp.

Hand-delivered.

“Can I?”

Daniel nodded.

The letter was not long.

I did not read every word arrangement.”

That word stopped me.

“What arrangement?”

Teresa frowned.

“I don’t know.”

Another letter referred to Rosa.

Another to Roberto.

Another to Mr. Salcedo, the attorney.

The same people appeared again and again.

This was not merely an affair.

Something financial or legal tied them together.

Daniel took a letter from my hand.

He read faster.

“What does this mean?”

He showed me one paragraph.

Our father had written that Rosa “could not keep using the Valdés girl against us forever.”

The Valdés girl.

My mother?

Or Camila?

At the time the Gabriel?”

“Maybe.”

“Why?”

Andrew had been examining the dates.

He spoke quietly.

“Because Gabriel worked for the attorney handling the adoption.”

We all looked at him.

He continued.

“If something improper happened during Camila’s adoption and Gabriel knew about it, Rosa could threaten exposure.”

Teresa shook her head.

“He would have been young.”

“Old enough to know.”

I searched another letter.

There.

A reference to “the forged consent.”

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What?”

Daniel looked up.

I read the line aloud.

Our father had written that Salcedo had assured Rosa the forged consent could never be traced back to them.

My mother had not merely been pressured.

Her adoption paperwork may have been falsified.

Teresa covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.”

Daniel took the page.

“Dad realization stunned me.

My mother married a man connected to the theft of her first child.

Did she ever know?

Elvira’s earlier statement returned.

Your father never told Emma everything.

No.

He had not.

Daniel began opening envelopes faster.

One contained a photograph of Marisol standing beside our father near a lake.

Another showed them sitting on the hood of a car.

There was no ambiguity.

They had been together.

For years.

The dates overlapped our parents’ marriage.

I sat down.

My father had not simply lied about Daniel’s birth.

He had lived parallel lives.

“What did Mom know about Marisol?” I asked.

Teresa shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Daniel found a smaller envelope tucked between the letters.

It had not been sealed.

Inside was a hospital identification card for Baby Boy Robles.

Mother: Marisol Robles.

Date of birth matched Daniel’s exactly.

Paola sat beside him.

“That’s you.”

He nodded.

No one needed DNA for that part.

Not anymore.

Still, Daniel said, “I’m doing the test.”

“Of course,” Andrew replied.

Daniel kept digging.

At the bottom of the box was a small notebook.

Marisol’s name was written inside.

The early pages contained ordinary things.

Expenses.

Doctor appointments.

Baby supplies.

Then, near the back, the tone changed.

Entries became shorter.

More anxious.

Rosa knows about Gabriel.

Salcedo came tonight.

Gabriel says he can get us away.

Mother says she will destroy him first.

Daniel read silently.

His face became harder with every page.

Then he stopped.

“What?”

I asked.

He handed me the notebook.

The final complete entry was dated the day after his birth.

Gabriel came to hospital. Says Emma knows nothing. He says he will tell her after we leave. I don’t believe him anymore. Rosa says if I keep Mateo, Gabriel loses everything and Salcedo goes to prison.
