I was young. Angry. Emma\u2019s name in the adoption papers was Vald\u00e9s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaola must have introduced you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe introduced me to Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teresa shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never asked his mother\u2019s maiden name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of all the assumptions required.<\/p>\n<p>All the ordinary ways families fail to exchange the one fact that matters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did you realize?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the reception. You thought it was food poisoning. Of having spent years rejecting Emma.
