If Teresa was adopted, there may be enough to confirm some part of this before anyone confronts her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom tried that for years,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom didn\u2019t have the documents Paola found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have the certificate anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeresa took it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould Rosa have kept copies?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI searched the apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of my mother\u2019s box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who hide one thing sometimes hide two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Her resentment had dimmed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma\u2019s belongings are in storage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother has some. Hurting you may have been collateral damage she convinced herself didn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was worse in a different way.<\/p>\n<p>The storage facility was nearly empty.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel unlocked the unit while Paola stood beneath the fluorescent lights with both hands beneath her belly.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were stacked plastic bins, old furniture, and cardboard boxes labeled in Rosa\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>KITCHEN.<\/p>\n<p>CHRISTMAS.<\/p>\n<p>PAOLA SCHOOL.<\/p>\n<p>PAPERS.<\/p>\n<p>We all saw the last one at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel pulled it down.<\/p>\n<p>Dust rose.<\/p>\n<p>Paola sneezed.<\/p>\n<p>The lid resisted before giving way.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were utility bills, tax documents, old insurance policies, photographs, and letters tied with ribbon.<\/p>\n<p>We sat on the concrete floor.<\/p>\n<p>For nearly an hour, we found nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then Andrew held up a small envelope.<\/p>\n<p>It had no name.<\/p>\n<p>Only a date.<\/p>\n<p>The year Teresa was born.<\/p>\n<p>Paola reached for it.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers shook.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a hospital bracelet.<\/p>\n<p>CAM\u2014<\/p>\n<p>The remainder had been cut away.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I searched the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>There was something else.<\/p>\n<p>A folded receipt from St. Agnes Home for Mothers and Infants.<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s papers included that name.<\/p>\n<p>I knew it instantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened my purse and pulled out photographs I had taken of Elvira\u2019s files.<\/p>\n<p>There.<\/p>\n<p>A letter my mother had sent to St. Agnes twenty-two years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>No response.<\/p>\n<p>Same institution.<\/p>\n<p>Same city.<\/p>\n<p>Same year.<\/p>\n<p>I showed Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at both documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not coincidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola sat against one of the boxes.<\/p>\n<p>Her face had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma told me Mom was born at Mercy Hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe lied,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n<p>Paola shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr somebody lied to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We kept searching.<\/p>\n<p>Near the bottom of the box was a thick packet held together by a rusted clip.<\/p>\n<p>The first page was a court petition.<\/p>\n<p>Most names had been removed from the copy.<\/p>\n<p>But the infant\u2019s first name remained.<\/p>\n<p>Camila.<\/p>\n<p>Below it:<\/p>\n<p>Female child, born to Emma Vald\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>My hands went numb.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel read over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>I heard the air leave him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola whispered, \u201cOh God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next page documented transfer of guardianship.<\/p>\n<p>The adoptive parents were listed as Roberto and Rosa Robles.<\/p>\n<p>Rosa.<\/p>\n<p>Paola\u2019s grandmother.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who had raised Teresa.<\/p>\n<p>We had proof.<\/p>\n<p>Not DNA.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>But proof that Rosa Robles received custody of Emma Vald\u00e9s\u2019s daughter, Camila.<\/p>\n<p>Paola slid down onto the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice barely existed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother was Camila.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel backed away.<\/p>\n<p>He struck one of the metal shelves.<\/p>\n<p>The sound echoed through the unit.<\/p>\n<p>Paola stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>His face was white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are my niece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pressed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n<p>The sight broke something in me.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever anger I had toward him disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>He was my brother.<\/p>\n<p>And his entire marriage had just changed shape in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew moved toward him.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We did.<\/p>\n<p>Paola sank back onto a box.<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside her.<\/p>\n<p>For a while, neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cI didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A tear slipped down her cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew there was something wrong. I knew Mom had another name. I knew your mother frightened her.
