A dessert table had been arranged with frosted cookies, miniature cakes, sugared almonds, and little wooden blocks spelling EMMA.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew\u2019s hand touched the small of my back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWant to leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across the room, Paola saw me.<\/p>\n<p>Her smile faltered.<\/p>\n<p>Only briefly.<\/p>\n<p>Then she recovered and lifted one hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLucia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I walked over.<\/p>\n<p>She was wearing a cream-colored dress and sitting in a high-backed chair my mother-in-law had positioned like a throne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou invited me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes dropped toward my purse.<\/p>\n<p>It was such a quick glance that I might have imagined it.<\/p>\n<p>But I remembered it.<\/p>\n<p>My mother-in-law approached and kissed my cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad we\u2019re behaving like adults.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>I answered before he could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel appeared from the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>He looked tired.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, seeing him stripped some of the anger from me.<\/p>\n<p>He was my brother.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever truth waited inside those papers could destroy his life.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent the previous night wondering whether I should warn him privately.<\/p>\n<p>But every time I considered it, I remembered his evasiveness when I asked whether Paola had known about the name Emma.<\/p>\n<p>He had protected her first.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that was what husbands were supposed to do.<\/p>\n<p>But now I needed to know what exactly he was protecting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou good?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He searched my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou promise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI promised I wouldn\u2019t make a scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something in my wording made him uneasy.<\/p>\n<p>Before he could question it, one of Paola\u2019s friends pulled him away to move gifts.<\/p>\n<p>The shower unfolded with painful normality.<\/p>\n<p>Guests guessed the baby\u2019s weight.<\/p>\n<p>Someone measured Paola\u2019s belly with ribbon.<\/p>\n<p>My mother-in-law served coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Women discussed strollers, sleep schedules, breast pumps, and nursery paint.<\/p>\n<p>I participated when required.<\/p>\n<p>I smiled when someone pointed a phone at me.<\/p>\n<p>All the while, the old photograph inside my purse seemed to gain weight.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew remained close.<\/p>\n<p>He never asked whether I had changed my mind.<\/p>\n<p>He knew I had not.<\/p>\n<p>About an hour into the shower, I noticed Paola watching me from across the room.<\/p>\n<p>Not openly.<\/p>\n<p>She would speak to someone, laugh, then glance toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Once, I caught her staring directly at my purse.<\/p>\n<p>That bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>She could not possibly know what was inside.<\/p>\n<p>Unless she did.<\/p>\n<p>I went into the kitchen for water.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeriously, Lucia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been weird all afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo have you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is important to Paola.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen please let her have today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I studied him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel, I need to ask you something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked immediately wary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mom ever talk to you about Paola\u2019s family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer mother. Teresa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Too fast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t need to think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mom ever ask questions about Teresa Herrera?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not much.<\/p>\n<p>Enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat aren\u2019t you telling me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed the back of his neck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom asked me once where Teresa was born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heartbeat quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it was a random question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes met mine.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel knew something was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe not what.<\/p>\n<p>But enough to be afraid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you find?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Before I could answer, Paola entered.<\/p>\n<p>Her gaze moved between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, none of us moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then Paola smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took a bottle of sparkling water from the refrigerator and returned to the party.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel grabbed my wrist lightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pulled free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll know soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLucia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it was going to happen there.<\/p>\n<p>I already knew that.<\/p>\n<p>Because twenty minutes later, my mother-in-law gathered everyone for a toast.<\/p>\n<p>Paola stood beside the dessert table.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel placed his arm around her.<\/p>\n<p>Someone handed her a glass of sparkling cider.<\/p>\n<p>My mother-in-law began speaking about grandchildren, family, continuity, and how wonderful it was that everyone had \u201cmoved beyond unnecessary tension.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nearly laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Then she mentioned the baby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur little Emma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several people applauded.<\/p>\n<p>Paola smiled.<\/p>\n<p>She rested one hand over her stomach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re so excited,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I know there\u2019s been some misunderstanding about the name, but Daniel and I hope everyone can understand that Emma simply felt right for our daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes found mine.<\/p>\n<p>That was deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone else heard reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>I heard a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew shifted beside me.<\/p>\n<p>I could feel his question without looking.<\/p>\n<p>Are you sure?<\/p>\n<p>I was not sure.<\/p>\n<p>That was the problem.<\/p>\n<p>I needed to become sure.<\/p>\n<p>Paola lifted her glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Emma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCamila.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not raise my voice.<\/p>\n<p>I barely spoke above normal conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the word cut through the room.<\/p>\n<p>Paola stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>Her glass remained halfway to her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>The smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Not gradually.<\/p>\n<p>Instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>My mother-in-law frowned at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept my eyes on Paola.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCamila.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second time was worse.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers tightened around the glass.<\/p>\n<p>The color drained from her cheeks.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody else understood.<\/p>\n<p>But she did.<\/p>\n<p>I knew it with a certainty that frightened me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you saying that?\u201d Paola asked.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was different.<\/p>\n<p>Smaller.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho\u2019s Camila?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened my purse.<\/p>\n<p>Paola saw my hand move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLucia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was panic in the way she said my name.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled out the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, I held it facing only her.<\/p>\n<p>My mother at eighteen.<\/p>\n<p>The newborn in her arms.<\/p>\n<p>The name written on the back.<\/p>\n<p>Paola stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Her lips parted.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the sentence that changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>I had expected confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Denial.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe anger.<\/p>\n<p>I had not expected recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned toward his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know that picture?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just asked where she got it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI meant\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I turned the photograph so everyone could see.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother had a daughter before Daniel and me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother-in-law sat down slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom was eighteen. The baby was taken from her and adopted. She spent years trying to find her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I flipped the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer name was Camila.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola looked as if the floor had shifted beneath her.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t she tell us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause our grandfather forced her to keep quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I removed the folded pages from my purse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me after she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at our mother\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>I watched anger, disbelief, and grief collide across his face.<\/p>\n<p>But Paola was not looking at the letter.<\/p>\n<p>She was looking at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho raised her?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>The question escaped before she could stop it.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes snapped up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why do you recognize the photograph?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother-in-law stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is completely inappropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew finally spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen maybe somebody should explain why Paola looks terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola glared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pregnant and your wife is ambushing me with some bizarre family secret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stepped between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLucia, stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my brother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom traced Camila through two surnames.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola\u2019s breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>Then I said the second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHerrera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The glass slipped in her hand.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel caught it before it fell.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother\u2019s family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached into my purse again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Mom believed Teresa Herrera might be Camila.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>Paola did not.<\/p>\n<p>She stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>One step.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Her hand covered her stomach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat proves nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That seemed to surprise her.<\/p>\n<p>I took out my phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I found something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the old social-media comment.<\/p>\n<p>Love you, Grandma Rosa. Your Cami forever.<\/p>\n<p>I held it toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did your grandmother call you Cami?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel read it over her shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is Cami?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a nickname.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Paola?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma called me lots of things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy Cami?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother remembered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola\u2019s eyes returned to me.<\/p>\n<p>At last, the hostility disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Something else replaced it.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>Not fear of me.<\/p>\n<p>Fear of being recognized.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of my mother watching her at Daniel\u2019s wedding.<\/p>\n<p>The strange grip on my hand.<\/p>\n<p>The questions she later asked him about Teresa.<\/p>\n<p>The hidden compartment.<\/p>\n<p>The warning.<\/p>\n<p>Names appearing where they did not belong.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stepped away from Paola.<\/p>\n<p>His face had gone gray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me what you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaola.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you shaking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Her hands were trembling violently.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>The balloons bumped softly against the ceiling above us.<\/p>\n<p>A child somewhere in the back room laughed, unaware that the adults had stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Then Paola raised her head.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes found mine.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since I had known her, there was no competition in them.<\/p>\n<p>No superiority.<\/p>\n<p>No polished contempt.<\/p>\n<p>Only exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandmother told me never to answer to that name in front of strangers,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>When she answered, her voice was almost inaudible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCamila.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=30264\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Paola Finally Explained Why Her Grandmother Buried the Name Camila, and Daniel Realized Our Family Secret Had Reached His Marriage<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My mother-in-law\u2019s house looked as though someone had tried to decorate away every uncomfortable thing our family had ever done.
