The father of the baby disappeared after learning she was pregnant. My grandfather considered the pregnancy a humiliation. Arrangements were made. The baby was taken.<\/p>\n<p>Her name had been Camila.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the pages.<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to have tilted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I appreciated him for that.<\/p>\n<p>There are moments when comfort becomes noise.<\/p>\n<p>I continued reading.<\/p>\n<p>My mother wrote that she had spent decades regretting what happened. I\u2019ve wondered for years whether I chose the wrong side of that line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Daniel know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That hurt differently.<\/p>\n<p>My father had died before my mother.<\/p>\n<p>All those years, both of them had known.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome tomorrow,\u201d Elvira repeated. \u201cBring everything you found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I agreed.<\/p>\n<p>After hanging up, I returned the photograph to the blanket.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew picked it up carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCamila.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>The name felt strange in my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>A sister who had existed before me.<\/p>\n<p>A woman who might still be alive.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>I barely slept.<\/p>\n<p>By nine the next morning, I was standing outside Aunt Elvira\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>She opened the door before I knocked.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes went directly to the photograph in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anger rose so quickly that I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stepped aside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her kitchen looked exactly as it had when I was twelve: floral curtains, porcelain saints, a dented kettle, and crocheted covers protecting furniture that had survived three generations.<\/p>\n<p>She made coffee.<\/p>\n<p>I did not touch mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elvira sat opposite me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur father was cruel about appearances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew that much.<\/p>\n<p>My grandfather had been dead for years, but even my childhood memories of him were rigid: polished shoes, straight-backed chairs, silence during meals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Emma became pregnant,\u201d Elvira continued, \u201che behaved as if she had committed a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was the father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA boy who vanished as soon as he learned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Camila?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My aunt looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother wanted to keep her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence hurt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe begged. She fought. Then your father\u2014my father\u2014arranged an adoption through people he knew. Emma was exhausted after giving birth. They gave her medication. Papers appeared. By the time she understood what she had signed, the baby was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed my fingertips against the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it legal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elvira\u2019s expression answered before her words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLegal enough for people who wanted no questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s young face suddenly seemed unbearable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe searched?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elvira stood and opened a cupboard.<\/p>\n<p>From behind a stack of serving dishes, she removed a shoebox wrapped in an old pillowcase.<\/p>\n<p>She placed it between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what I kept.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside were letters, photocopies, addresses, hospital receipts, names crossed out and rewritten.<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s private investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Her other life.<\/p>\n<p>I found one sheet covered in dates.<\/p>\n<p>Near the bottom, she had written three surnames.<\/p>\n<p>Robles.<\/p>\n<p>Herrera.<\/p>\n<p>Then a question mark.<\/p>\n<p>Beside them was a location.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it.<\/p>\n<p>Paola had grown up there.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Elvira.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLucia, a city has thousands of families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom met Paola.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Daniel\u2019s wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elvira\u2019s eyes narrowed with remembered pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe came to me during the reception.
