I had not embroidered it onto blankets or saved it in one of those baby-name apps people pass around. For me, the name was private, almost sacred. It belonged to my mother, and after she died, speaking it casually felt like handling something fragile with careless hands.

My mother’s full name had been Emma Valdés. She was the kind of woman who remembered which neighbor took sugar in her coffee and which child hated onions, yet somehow forgot her own birthday until someone produced a cake. When cancer reduced her world to hospital rooms, plastic bracelets, and measured doses of medication, she remained stubbornly interested in everyone else.

Three days before she died, she squeezed my hand and asked whether Andrew and I still wanted children.

I laughed because crying had become exhausting.

“Someday,” I told her.

She looked toward the hospital window. Rain had blurred the city lights into long streaks of yellow.

“If you ever have a girl,” she said, “give her a name she can grow into.”

I almost told her then.

Emma.

Her name.

But something stopped me. Perhaps I thought saying it would sound like preparation for her death. Perhaps I still believed that refusing to discuss the future could bargain with it.

So I kissed her forehead instead.

She died that weekend.

Two years later, I was eleven weeks pregnant when my sister-in-law Paola announced at Sunday lunch that her unborn daughter would be named Emma.

The fork stopped halfway to my mouth.

Nobody noticed except Andrew.

We were at my mother-in-law’s house, crowded around the long dining table she reserved for birthdays, holidays, baptisms, engagements, and arguments everyone later pretended had never happened. Daniel, my older brother, sat beside Paola with one arm resting proudly behind her chair.

Paola touched her stomach.

“We finally decided,” she said.

My mother-in-law leaned forward eagerly.

“And?”

Paola smiled.

“Emma.”

There was a burst of approval around the table.

My father-in-law repeated the name thoughtfully. My mother-in-law clasped her hands and declared it elegant. Daniel kissed Paola’s temple.

Only Andrew remained silent.

Under the table, his hand found mine.

He knew.

I had told him about the name on the night the pregnancy test turned positive. We had been standing barefoot in our bathroom at six in the morning, staring at two pink lines while the shower dripped behind us.

“If it’s a girl,” I had whispered, “I want Emma.”

Andrew had smiled immediately.

“Your mom.”

I nodded.

We had agreed not to announce anything yet. Not the pregnancy, not possible names. I was frightened by how much could go wrong in those first months, and grief had taught me not to trust happiness simply because it had arrived.

Now Paola was sitting three chairs away, smiling as my mother’s name became hers.

I lowered my fork.

Daniel finally noticed my expression.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

It was a bad answer. Everyone knew it.

Paola’s eyes moved from me to Andrew and back again.

“You don’t like it?”

“It’s a beautiful name.”

The table went strangely quiet despite my careful tone.

Paola tilted her head.

“Then why do you look upset?”

Andrew shifted beside me, but I touched his knee beneath the table.

I wanted to answer without turning the afternoon into a family trial.

“It was my mother’s name.”

Daniel frowned.

“Obviously.”

Something in that one word hurt more than I expected.

Obviously.

As though remembering our mother had somehow become an inconvenience.

“I’d planned to use it if we ever had a daughter.”

Paola’s smile tightened.

“You never told me that.”

“I didn’t know I needed to reserve it.”

Daniel sighed.

“Lucia.”

There was already a warning in his voice.

I looked at him.

“What?”

“It’s a name.”

My chest tightened.

“It was Mom’s name.”

“And Mom was my mother too.”

That silenced me.

Not because he was wrong.

Because he was right in a way that made the situation harder.

Daniel had loved her. He had sat beside her during chemotherapy. He had driven her to appointments when I was working. He had cried at the funeral until he could barely stand.

But Daniel was not choosing Emma.

Paola was.

I looked at my sister-in-law.

“Is this about Mom?”

Paola hesitated.

Barely a second.

“No,” she said. “I’ve always loved the name.”

There was nothing openly cruel in the sentence.

Still, something about the way she said it bothered me.

My mother-in-law immediately intervened.

“Well, that settles it.
