If not, send it back.

I stared at the cover.

Day 6.

The coincidence hit me.

On the original Day 6, CPS entered the house.

On this Day 6, I was living in a dormitory with twenty teenagers, three staff members, emergency protocols, meal cards, and too much food.

I opened the notebook.

The pages smelled faintly old.

Day 1.

Day 2.

Day 3.

The entries.

The calculations.

The fear.

I had read them many times.

This time they felt like someone else's handwriting.

Not completely.

Still mine.

But younger.

I wanted to reach backward and tell her things.

Call.

Eat the bread.

Tell Derek.

Tell Sarah sooner.

You are allowed to scare people if you need help.

You are allowed to ruin a vacation.

You are allowed to be inconvenient.

You are allowed to be a child.

I could not tell her.

She already survived.

Instead I took the notebook to the beach.

The group had free time before dinner.

I sat above the water on a piece of driftwood.

Wind pulled at the pages.

I read until Part—no.

There had been no parts then.

Just days.

That was important.

Real life had not arrived with titles.

Meaning came later.

I reached the final old entry:

Today I spent more than sixty-four cents on a milkshake and nothing bad happened.

I laughed.

Jade sat beside me.

"What's funny?"

"Old note."

"Embarrassing?"

"Kind of."

"Read it."

"No."

"Then definitely embarrassing."

I closed the notebook.

She pointed at it.

"Diary?"

"Sort of."

"Secrets?"

"Not anymore."

That answer surprised me.

Not anymore.

Everything important had been told.

Court.

Therapy.

Mom.

Grandma.

Priya.

Me.

The notebook no longer carried a secret.

It carried history.

That evening, Mom called.

I answered from the beach.

Video.

She looked at the ocean behind me.

"Wow."

"It's freezing."

"Looks beautiful."

"It is."

She hesitated.

"You okay with the ocean?"

I understood.

"Yeah."

"Good."

Silence.

Then she said, "I'm glad Hawaii didn't take that from you."

I looked at the waves.

"Me too."

Mom did not apologize again.

I appreciated that.

Sometimes repeated apologies stopped being about the person hurt and became a request for reassurance.

She had learned.

We talked about sea stars.

Then Grandma joined the call from her house and complained that I had not worn the thicker jacket.

I turned the phone toward my coat.

"I am wearing it."

"Zip it."

Mom laughed.

I zipped it.

Some family patterns deserved to survive.

Later, our group had a bonfire.

We roasted marshmallows.

Someone played guitar badly.

Dad would have appreciated that.

I thought of him.

Not as money.

Not as tragedy.

Just Dad.

I imagined telling him about the program.

Marine biology.

Cold water.

Mom.

Everything.

What would he think?

I no longer needed to know.

The dead deserved to remain people, not judges inside our heads.

When the program ended, Grandma and Mom both came to meet me at the airport.

Derek came too.

That surprised me.

He held a sign.

WELCOME BACK, SCIENTIST.

I rolled my eyes.

Then hugged him.

He had remarried no one.

Not yet.

He was dating someone.

I had met her once.

She seemed nice.

That felt weird.

Then less weird.

Life kept moving without asking whether I was ready.

We went to dinner.

All four of us.

Grandma.

Mom.

Derek.

Me.

Years earlier, that combination would have been impossible.

Now it was awkward but manageable.

Mom and Derek spoke politely.

No bitterness performed for me.

No pretending the past never happened either.

At one point Derek asked about the program.

I talked for ten minutes.

Maybe fifteen.

Everyone listened.

No one made the conversation about Hawaii.

That mattered more than I expected.

After dinner, Derek drove home separately.

Mom stood beside her car.

Grandma beside ours.

Mom asked, "Can I see your postcard?"

I had told her about it.

I handed it over.

She read the back.

I came to the ocean because I wanted to.

Mom looked at me.

"That's good."

"Yeah."

She gave it back.

I put it inside the original notebook.

Back at Grandma's, I opened to a blank page after the final old entry.

I had not written in it for a long time.

I picked up a pen.

Then stopped.

Did the notebook need more?

For years, I had treated writing like protection.

If I recorded everything, it could not be denied.

But I no longer needed every good day documented for evidence.

Some things could simply happen.

Still, one sentence wanted to exist.

So I wrote:

The ocean is cold here.

Then:

I chose to come.

I closed the notebook.

No dramatic conclusion.

No perfect forgiveness.

No final answer.

Just choice.

The next day, I put the notebook in a box with Dad's letters, photographs, the wooden turtle from Hawaii, and the postcard from Oregon.

Not hidden.

Not locked.

The box went on my bedroom shelf.

Visible.

Reachable.

Mine.

That evening, Mom texted:

Proud of you.

I stared at it.

Once, praise from her had felt like something I had to earn by making life easier.

Now I could accept it or not.

I replied:

Thanks.

Then Grandma called from downstairs.

"Food!"

"What?"

"Soup!"

I smiled.

Tomato soup.

Of course.

I walked down.

There was bread beside it.

More than enough.

I ate without counting.

Outside, rain tapped the windows.

The front door was locked.

My phone sat upstairs.

I did not need it beside my hand.

And somewhere hundreds of miles away, the ocean kept moving without carrying any secret that belonged to me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 25: The First College Brochure Arrived in My Name, and Mom Had to Watch Me Make a
