Investigators were comparing bank statements, benefit deposits, credit-card charges, and the accounts Mom had controlled since Dad died.

Grandma opened the envelope carefully.

The report was not written for children.

Numbers crowded the pages in columns.

Dates.

Transfers.

Institution names.

Account endings.

Grandma read silently for a while before speaking.

"The survivor benefits were deposited monthly."

"How much?"

She hesitated.

"Enough that you should never have been worried about having food."

That answer hurt more than an exact number.

I looked toward the window.

Outside, two children were chasing each other along the sidewalk. One carried an ice pop.

Ordinary things had started looking expensive to me even when they weren't.

Milk.

Bread.

A sandwich.

An adult answering a phone.

Grandma continued.

"The money was supposed to help support you. Housing, food, clothing, school expenses. Things connected to raising you."

"Did Mom use it for that?"

"Some of it."

"Some?"

Her mouth tightened.

"A lot of it can't be connected to you."

I thought of the hotel balcony.

The pineapple drinks.

The captions about escaping real life.

"How much went to Hawaii?"

"They're still working that out."

"So some did."

"Possibly."

I stood and walked to the bookshelf.

I didn't want to sit beside the papers anymore.

Grandma let me move.

She had become good at knowing when not to follow.

"What about the wedding?"

"Some transfers went into the joint wedding account."

I stared at the spines of books without seeing the titles.

Mom had shown me flower arrangements.

Cake samples.

Venue photographs.

She had complained about how much chairs cost.

I wondered whether I had paid for the chairs.

Grandma turned another page.

"There were also withdrawals from the insurance funds."

"Where did those go?"

"Some into checking accounts. Some toward debts."

"Whose debts?"

"Your mother's."

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"Of course."

Grandma looked up.

"You're allowed to be angry."

"I know."

"You're also allowed to be confused."

"I know."

But I wasn't confused about everything.

Twenty dollars had once seemed like proof that Mom expected me to survive with almost nothing.

Now it looked like something else.

A choice.

A number she had decided was enough.

Grandma placed the report aside.

"There is one more thing."

I turned.

Of course there was.

"The investigators believe one account is missing."

"What does that mean?"

"There are references to another account in the records, but they haven't located the current balance."

"Mine?"

"Possibly."

I crossed my arms.

"How much?"

"We don't know."

That answer stayed in my head all afternoon.

A missing account.

I imagined money disappearing through walls.

Hidden somewhere like the red room itself.

That evening Priya came over.

She brought copies of a few pages that she thought I should understand.

"Nothing here is your responsibility to solve," she said.

That sentence mattered enough that I wrote it down later.

She pointed to a line on one statement.

"This account received money from an insurance settlement after your father died."

I looked at the amount.

It was more money than I had ever seen written beside my name.

"What happened to it?"

"That's what investigators are tracing."

"Mom spent it?"

"Some was moved."

"Where?"

"Several places."

"Why can't they find all of it?"

"Because one transfer went into an account that no longer appears on the financial records we have."

I frowned.

"Can accounts disappear?"

"Not exactly."

"What does that mean?"

"It means someone may have moved the money again."

"Mom?"

Priya folded her hands.

"We don't know yet."

I hated that answer.

Not because she was being evasive.

Because uncertainty had become exhausting.

I wanted one room in my life where everything had labels.

Good.

Bad.

True.

False.

Instead I had Mom.

Who loved me and lied to me.

Who cut my sandwiches diagonally and left me alone for six days.

Who saved my school drawings and hid my father's death.

Priya asked whether I remembered seeing any bank names in the red room.

"No."

"Any envelopes that looked newer than the others?"

I thought.

There had been dozens.

Some white.

Some cream.

Some with windows.

Then I remembered one thing.

"A green folder."

Priya looked up.

"What green folder?"

"It was on the bottom shelf."

"Did anyone open it?"

"I don't know."

"What did it look like?"

"Dark green. Thick. It had writing on the tab."

"What writing?"

I tried to picture it.

My memory gave me only pieces.

A black marker.

Block letters.

Maybe initials.

"Something with a D."

Priya leaned forward.

"D?"

"Maybe."

Grandma asked, "Daniel?"

The name sent a small shock through me.

My father's name.

I closed my eyes.

The folder.

The shelf.

The photograph.

I tried to rebuild the room exactly.

"There were two words."

"What words?"

"I don't know."

I pressed my fingers to my forehead.

Priya said, "Don't force it."

"I saw it."

"I believe you."

"I should remember."

"You were standing in a room full of information about your father while learning he had died. Memory doesn't work like a camera."

I looked at her.

That was another sentence I kept.

Two days later, Deputy Evans called Grandma.

The green folder had been found.

It had not been logged with the first group of documents because it had fallen behind a box when the shelves were moved.

Priya came over that evening with an update.

The label on the folder read:

DANIEL TRUST.

My stomach tightened.

"Trust?"

"A legal arrangement for money or property," she explained.

"From Dad?"

"It appears so."

"Mom knew?"

"Yes."

"How do you know?"

"Her signature is on several documents."

I sat very still.

"What did Dad do?"

Priya chose her words carefully.

"He created a small trust before he died. It was intended to hold money for you until you were older."

"Did he know he was going to die?"

"No. It appears to have been part of ordinary estate planning."

"So he planned for me."

"Yes."

The words went through me slowly.

Dad had planned for me.

Mom had told me he left.

Those two things could not live together peacefully in my head.

Priya opened the folder.

She did not hand it to me immediately.

"There is a letter inside addressed to you."

I stopped breathing.

"From Dad?"

"It appears so."

"Did Mom read it?"

"We don't know."

"Can I?"

"Yes."

My hands started shaking before I even touched the page.

The paper was older.

Folded twice.

My name was written on the front in handwriting I didn't recognize.

Maya.

Just Maya.

I opened it.

The letter was short.

Not dramatic.

Dad wrote that if I was reading it, something had happened before he got the chance to explain certain things himself.

He wrote that he hoped I would grow up knowing I was loved.

He wrote that the money he had set aside was not supposed to make me rich.

It was supposed to make certain things easier.

School.

A first car if I needed one.

A safe place to live.

Choices.

That word appeared twice.

Choices.

I had to stop reading.

Grandma took my hand.

I pulled away, then reached for her again a few seconds later.

Dad had wanted me to have choices.

Six days alone in the house had contained almost none.

I finished the letter.

At the bottom he had written one final line.

Use this to build your life, not to pay for mine.

I stared at it.

Priya looked away, giving me privacy even though she sat only a few feet away.

"How much was in the trust?" I asked.

She answered softly.

"Originally, enough to matter."

"What does that mean?"

"More than the missing account we were discussing."

"Is it gone?"

"Most of it appears to have been moved."

"By Mom?"

"Her name is on the transfers."

My eyes burned.

"Where?"

"That is what they're tracing now."

Grandma whispered something under her breath.

I folded the letter along its old creases.

Carefully.

More carefully than anything I had touched in weeks.

That night I put Dad's letter inside my notebook.

The notebook had started as evidence of hunger.

Now it held proof that someone I barely remembered had thought about my future.

The next morning, investigators found the destination of one major trust transfer.

It had gone into an account belonging to a small company.

The company had one owner.

Valerie Keller.

My mother.

The company had never done any business anyone could find.

No customers.

No employees.

No office.

Only money moving through it.

And one withdrawal, made eleven months before Hawaii, had been labeled with a single word.

RENOVATION.

When Grandma read that part aloud, we both thought of the same place.

The locked red room.

But when police returned to inspect the basement again, they found something none of us expected.

The room itself had not been renovated.

Another room had.

One I had never known existed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Behind the Basement Wall Was a Second Space, and Inside It Sat Proof That Mom Had Been Planning Far Ahead

The first financial report arrived three days after the supervised visit.
