Don't worry.

Timestamp: 8:47 a.m.

Before they left.

Before she told him my ride was coming.

Derek rubbed his face.

"I didn't understand what 'sort her out' meant."

Grandma's mouth tightened.

"Because no normal person would think it meant leaving an eleven-year-old alone."

He nodded.

There were more messages.

Mom telling him not to call me because I was probably busy with Chloe.

Mom saying the lake had weak reception.

Mom changing the subject whenever he mentioned me.

Each message filled another gap.

She hadn't simply avoided telling him.

She had actively maintained the lie.

I thought about the photograph he sent on the plane.

Hope you're having fun at the lake!

Mom had been sitting right beside him.

She must have watched him send it.

That made my stomach hurt.

"Can I ask something?" I said.

Derek nodded.

"Who came to the house?"

He looked confused.

I described the car.

The man.

The words.

Maya, you home?

Derek's face changed.

"What night?"

"Day four."

He looked at Grandma.

"I might know."

My hands went cold.

"Who?"

"Friend of mine named Lucas."

"Why did he come?"

Derek pulled out his phone.

"I asked him to drop off a package."

I stared at him.

"A package?"

"For Valerie. Something for the wedding."

He scrolled through messages.

There it was.

Hey man, we're gone for a month. Can you leave the envelope inside the porch bench? Maya's at the lake.

Lucas had replied later:

Stopped by. Thought I heard movement inside. Called Maya's name but nobody answered. Everything okay?

Derek showed me.

"I didn't see this until later because we were out."

"What did Mom say?"

He looked sick.

"She told me you had probably come home early to grab something."

I felt cold all over.

She knew.

She knew a man had come to the house.

She knew I was inside.

She knew he'd tried the door.

And when I told her I was frightened, she acted as though it might have been someone at the wrong house.

Grandma read the message twice.

"She knew exactly who it was."

Derek nodded.

I stood up.

I didn't know where I was going.

I just needed movement.

I walked into the kitchen.

Grandma followed.

"Maya?"

"She knew."

"Yes."

"She made me think I was overreacting."

Grandma touched my shoulder.

I pulled away.

Not because I was angry at her.

Because I couldn't stand being touched.

"She knew," I repeated.

That night I opened my notebook.

For the first time, I crossed something out.

The sentence:

I almost called 911 but I didn't know if being scared was enough.

Under it I wrote:

Mom knew who came to the door.

Then:

She didn't tell me.

My handwriting shook.

I turned to a fresh page.

For six days, I had thought the worst thing Mom had done was leave.

Now I understood something more frightening.

She had received new chances to protect me every day.

And every day, she had chosen the trip again.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Interview Was Supposed to Last an Hour, Until My Notebook Revealed Something No One Had Thought to Ask

Grandma did not ask me what I wanted for dinner.
