I'm with Child Protective Services. I'm currently in your residence with your daughter."

A pause.

Then Mom's voice.

"I don't understand why CPS is involved."

She sounded furious.

Not frightened.

Not relieved.

Furious.

Ms. Vance said, "Your daughter reports that she has been alone in this home for six days."

"That is not accurate."

I looked at Sarah.

My chest went tight.

Ms. Vance's voice stayed calm.

"What part is inaccurate?"

"She has neighbors."

Sarah's head turned sharply.

"Which neighbor was assigned to supervise her?"

Another pause.

"I said people are around."

"That was not my question."

Mom exhaled loudly through the phone.

"This is completely out of proportion. My daughter is very mature."

Ms. Vance glanced toward the kitchen.

"Your daughter is eleven."

"Almost twelve."

The same phrase.

Exactly the same.

I felt my hands go cold.

"Who is physically responsible for her while you are in Hawaii?" Ms. Vance asked.

"I have been checking on her."

"By telephone?"

"Yes."

"How frequently?"

"Every day."

I almost stood up.

That wasn't true.

Not every day.

Not when I needed her.

Not when the man came to the door.

Ms. Vance already knew.

She had seen the call log.

"Your daughter has documented numerous unanswered calls and messages."

"She's a child. She doesn't understand that adults can't respond instantly."

"How much food did you leave?"

"There was food in the house."

"How much cash?"

Another pause.

"I don't remember."

"Your daughter reports twenty dollars."

"I gave her money for emergencies."

"How was she expected to obtain food for thirty days?"

"This wasn't supposed to be thirty days."

That sentence changed everything.

Ms. Vance leaned slightly closer to the phone.

"Explain."

"I was arranging for someone to get her."

"Who?"

"I was making calls."

"Who did you call?"

Silence.

"Ms. Keller?"

"I don't have to provide every detail of my personal conversations."

Deputy Evans stared at the floor.

Sarah's jaw tightened.

Ms. Vance said, "You do need to identify the responsible adult you arranged to supervise your eleven-year-old child."

Mom's voice rose.

"This is ridiculous. I was going to figure it out."

The room went completely still.

Even Mom seemed to hear what she had just admitted.

Ms. Vance spoke carefully.

"So when you boarded the flight, there was no adult arranged?"

"I believed the original plan was still workable."

"No. Your daughter says the original plan had already been canceled."

"Maya gets confused when she's upset."

My throat closed.

I had known she might say it.

Hearing it still hurt.

Ms. Vance looked at me.

Not suspiciously.

Just checking.

I pointed toward my phone.

"The message from Chloe."

She nodded.

I found it.

The cancellation had a timestamp.

It had arrived more than two hours before Mom left for the airport.

Ms. Vance read it aloud.

Mom said nothing.

Then, from somewhere near Mom, another voice entered the call.

"Valerie?"

Derek.

Mom said quickly, "I'll call you back."

"Who are you talking to?"

"Derek, not now."

"Is that about Maya?"

No one in our kitchen moved.

Mom apparently tried to take the phone off speaker.

Her voice became muffled.

Then Derek said, clearer this time, "What happened to Maya?"

Mom answered too quickly.

"Nothing happened."

Ms. Vance interrupted.

"Sir, my name is Linda Vance with Child Protective Services."

Silence.

I pictured Derek standing in some hotel room in Hawaii, probably still wearing vacation clothes, trying to make sense of those words.

"CPS?" he said.

Mom's voice snapped.

"Linda, this conversation is with me."

Ms. Vance did not raise her voice.

"Mr. Derek, were you informed that Maya would be staying alone during this trip?"

"No."

His answer came immediately.

My eyes filled.

Not because it surprised me.

Because somebody had finally said the truth without hesitation.

"No," Derek repeated. "She was supposed to be with Chloe's family."

Mom said his name sharply.

He ignored her.

"Is Maya okay?"

That was the first question he asked.

I turned my face away.

Ms. Vance said, "She is physically safe at this moment."

"What does that mean?"

"She has reportedly been alone for six days."

The silence afterward seemed enormous.

Then Derek said one word.

"What?"

Mom began talking.

"The arrangement fell through after we left—"

"No."

Derek's voice had changed.

Mom stopped.

"You told me in the driveway that her ride was coming later."

"Derek, listen—"

"You told me she was going to the lake."

"I was trying not to ruin the trip over something I could solve."

Something struck a hard surface on their end.

Maybe he put down a glass.

Maybe his hand hit the counter.

"You left her there?"

"I was handling it."

"From Hawaii?"

"I gave her money."

"How much?"

Mom did not answer.

Derek asked again.

"How much?"

I whispered, "Twenty."

Ms. Vance repeated it.

There was a long silence.

Then Derek said, "Put Maya on."

Mom objected immediately.

"No."

"I wasn't asking you."

Ms. Vance looked at me.

"Do you want to speak with him?"

I nodded.

She carried the phone over.

"Hey," I said.

Nothing came back for a second.

Then Derek's voice sounded different from any way I'd heard it before.

"Maya."

"Hi."

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Did anyone hurt you?"

"No."

"Have you been there alone every night?"

"Yeah."

He took a shaky breath.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

The question hurt, though I knew he didn't mean it that way.

"Mom said not to."

Silence.

"What did she say?"

I looked toward Ms. Vance.

She nodded that I could answer.

"She said I'd ruin the trip."

Derek breathed out slowly.

"Oh, Maya."

Mom's voice came from farther away.

"Don't do this."

Derek's reply was sharp.

"Do what? Find out what happened?"

Then he spoke to me again.

"I need you to hear me. You would not have ruined anything by calling me."

I couldn't answer.

"If you had called me the first day, I would have come back."

That sentence broke something open inside me.

Not because I blamed him.

Because Mom had made me believe the opposite.

She had made me guard his vacation from the truth.

I started crying so suddenly that I felt embarrassed.

Sarah put her arm around my shoulders.

Derek heard.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I'm so sorry."

Ms. Vance gently took the phone back.

"We need to discuss immediate placement."

Mom spoke at once.

"Placement? She stays in my house."

"She cannot remain here alone."

"Sarah can check on her."

Sarah leaned toward the phone.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

She continued.

"I'll help Maya. But I'm not going to pretend this is an acceptable plan because you need one now."

Mom went silent.

Ms. Vance asked whether I had relatives nearby.

My grandmother lived three hours away.

Aunt Rachel lived in another state.

My father had disappeared from my life when I was very little.

I gave Ms. Vance Grandma's number.

She called.

Grandma answered on the second ring.

I heard only Ms. Vance's side at first.

Then she stepped into another room.

Ten minutes later she returned.

"Your grandmother is coming."

I felt relief and dread at the same time.

Grandma did not know Mom was in Hawaii.

She thought Mom and I were both home.

"How long?"

"About three hours."

Ms. Vance looked at me.

"Until then, Sarah has agreed to stay with you."

Sarah nodded.

Mom objected from Hawaii.

She wanted to know who had authorized decisions about her child.

Ms. Vance answered plainly.

"At this moment, you are several thousand miles away and your daughter has been found without adult supervision. We are making sure she is safe."

Mom said something about flights.

For one hopeful second I thought she was finally coming home.

Then I realized she was saying it would cost too much to change them.

Derek spoke over her.

"I'm coming back."

Mom stopped.

"What?"

"I'm changing my flight."

"You can't just—"

"I can."

"We paid for the hotel."

"I don't care."

"What about the rest of the trip?"

"I don't care."

I looked at the floor.

Part of me felt guilty.

That was the worst thing about Mom's warning.

Even after the truth came out, I still felt like I had ruined something.

Derek must have heard enough of the conversation to understand because he said, "Maya, none of this is because of you."

I didn't answer.

Mom started crying then.

It was the first time she sounded afraid.

Not when she learned someone had tried our door.

Not when she learned I had rationed food.

Not when she learned CPS was in the house.

When Derek said he was leaving Hawaii.

"You're destroying our vacation over this," she told him.

He answered quietly.

"No, Valerie. You did that before we boarded the plane."

The call ended soon afterward.

Grandma arrived three hours and twenty minutes later.

Her car stopped crooked in the driveway.

She didn't even close the driver's door.

She ran toward me.

I had never seen my grandmother run.

She wrapped both arms around me so tightly I could barely breathe.

Then she stepped back and looked at my face.

"What did she do?"

I couldn't answer.

Grandma saw the notebook on the table.

She saw the groceries Sarah had brought.

She saw the twenty-dollar envelope.

Her mouth tightened.

"Where is she?"

"Hawaii."

Grandma looked at Ms. Vance.

"Still?"

Ms. Vance nodded.

Grandma sat down hard in the nearest chair.

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Then she picked up my notebook.

"May I?"

I nodded.

She read the first page.

Then the second.

By the third, her hands had started shaking.

When she reached the line about sleeping beside the front door, she stopped.

She pressed her lips together.

"You're coming with me," she said.

Ms. Vance explained that temporary placement would need to be documented.

Grandma answered every question.

Yes, she had a spare bedroom.

Yes, she could care for me.

Yes, she would cooperate.

Yes, she would bring me to any appointment required.

Mom called while we were packing.

I looked at the screen.

For six days I had wanted that name to appear more than anything.

Now I didn't want to answer.

Ms. Vance noticed.

"You don't have to."

I let it ring.

Mom called again.

And again.

I turned the phone face down.

Grandma packed my clothes into a suitcase.

Not the pretty kind beside the front door.

An old green one from the hall closet.

I carried my notebook myself.

Before we left, I placed the original twenty-dollar envelope on the kitchen counter.

Inside it were the coins I had left.

Sixty-four cents.

Grandma saw me do it.

"What is that?"

"The money."

"You keep it."

I shook my head.

"I don't want it."

So we left it there.

Sixty-four cents on the counter.

Beside the grocery receipt.

Beside the notebook copy Ms. Vance had made.

Beside the first paperwork stating that I would not remain in Mom's care until the situation could be reviewed.

When Grandma drove me away, I looked back at the house.

For six days I had been terrified of leaving it unguarded.

Now I felt relief watching it disappear.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: At Grandma’s House, I Learned That Adults Could Ask Whether I Was Hungry Without Making the Question Feel Dangerous

Ms. Vance did not call Mom immediately.
