They're schedule risks."

I watched Arthur carefully.

He liked her.

Not because she was flattering.

Because she was willing to make the room uncomfortable early.

Natalie walked us through her reasoning.

I disagreed with one assumption and said so.

She asked why.

I explained.

Instead of defending herself, she changed the model live.

That impressed me more than any polished answer could have.

Afterward, Arthur asked me to stay on.

Elena remained too.

"Thoughts?" he asked.

"Hartwell understands the risk."

"Better than Falcon Ridge?"

"Different strengths."

"And Whitmore?"

"Good people. I'm not convinced the people we met would be the people doing the work."

Arthur's mouth tightened.

"Familiar problem."

"Exactly."

Elena leaned forward.

"Who would you pick?"

I looked at the three evaluation sheets.

"Today?"

"Today."

"Hartwell."

"Why?"

"Their senior lead challenged the schedule before asking for the business."

Arthur nodded slowly.

"And Falcon Ridge?"

"Strong second. I haven't reviewed it."

Rachel said, "We can arrange a documented return without Chloe reviewing contents."

"That would be ideal."

I appreciated that.

No opportunity for anyone to say I searched old notes after termination.

After the call, Rachel arranged for a courier and inventory receipt.

By five, the notebooks were gone.

I felt oddly lighter.

Then Jessica called.

Her interview had lasted three hours.

"How bad?" I asked.

"I don't know."

"Your lawyer was there?"

"Yes."

"Then trust her."

Jessica sounded exhausted.

"They showed me emails."

"What kind?"

"Marcus to Victor. Victor to Marcus. Marcus to finance."

I didn't ask for content.

She volunteered only what her lawyer had approved.

"The investigator kept asking when the Sterling staffing model changed."

My pulse jumped.

"So they're looking at it too."

"Yes."

"They asked you about me?"

"A lot."

"What did you say?"

"The truth."

That was all I wanted.

Jessica continued.

"They wanted to know when Marcus first told me I might take over."

"And?"

"June nineteenth."

I remembered the date.

Two days before Arthur's continuity question.

That wasn't comfortable.

"Anything else?"

"They asked if Marcus ever talked about cost savings."

I stopped.

"Did he?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"June."

My throat tightened.

"What did he say?"

Jessica hesitated.

"My lawyer said I can tell you generally."

"Generally is fine."

"He said the proposed economics wouldn't work if senior resources stayed fully allocated."

There it was.

Directly.

Not proof of deception.

But another piece.

"Did he specifically mention me?"

"Yes."

I sat down.

"What did he say?"

"That your cost base was too high for the delivery model they wanted."

I thought of every time Marcus called me indispensable.

Every time he promised Arthur I would remain.

Every time he told me Jessica needed exposure.

A business explanation was emerging underneath the politics.

My visibility was inconvenient.

My compensation was expensive.

Jessica was cheaper.

Once the contract was signed, Marcus may have believed Sterling would be too committed to object.

"Did he tell you you were replacing me because of cost?"

"No."

"What did he tell you?"

"That the account needed a more scalable leadership structure."

I almost laughed.

There was Marcus language again.

Scalable.

Meaning cheaper when translated into numbers.

"What did the investigator ask after that?"

"Who approved the staffing assumptions."

I leaned back.

"Did you know?"

"No."

"Did Marcus?"

"He said finance and Victor."

"To you at the time?"

"Yes."

That changed things again.

Marcus had not necessarily designed the economics alone.

"Jessica, follow your lawyer."

"I am."

"Don't talk to coworkers about any of this."

"I haven't."

"And don't send me anything."

"I know."

She paused.

"Are you okay?"

The question surprised me.

"Yes."

"Really?"

I thought about it.

"More than I expected."

After we hung up, I took a walk.

The evening air had cooled.

People were lining up outside a restaurant near my building.

A cyclist argued with a driver at the intersection.

Ordinary life.

My phone buzzed halfway around the block.

An email from Sterling.

Subject: Preferred Implementation Partner — Preliminary Decision.

Hartwell.

I smiled.

Not because I had won anything.

Because the program was moving forward.

That mattered.

When I returned home, another email waited.

This one came from a woman named Dr. Marissa Feld, the outside investigator hired by my former firm.

She requested an interview.

Rachel was copied.

Attached was a short description of the review's scope.

I opened it.

The language covered termination procedures, client representations, retention compensation, performance-management practices, and "accuracy of staffing assumptions used in the Sterling pursuit."

The last line went further.

The investigation would also examine whether any employee had been pressured to provide inaccurate statements during the review.

Jessica.

Her proposed statement.

Marcus asking her to document that I had voluntarily transitioned.

I read the sentence twice.

Then I understood something I had missed.

The investigation was no longer only asking what Marcus had done to me.

It was asking what he had tried to make other people say afterward.

And that was much harder to explain away as a business decision.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: The Outside Investigator Asked
