Public dispute. Litigation."

"I haven't threatened any of those."

"No."

"Then who's escalating?"

Victor ignored that.

"We're prepared to address the retention payment."

Rachel's expression remained neutral.

"Meaning?"

"The company can pay the forty thousand."

I almost smiled.

Two days earlier, the bonus had apparently been uncertain.

Now it was available.

"Is that payment conditioned on a release?" Rachel asked.

Victor paused.

"Naturally, we'd want closure."

There it was.

Not a bonus payment.

A settlement.

Rachel asked, "What else?"

"We can provide compensation for the abrupt termination."

"How much?"

"An additional seventy-five thousand."

I said nothing.

"Benefits continuation for six months," Victor continued. "Mutual non-disparagement. Neutral reference language."

I watched him.

The total amount sounded substantial.

Once, it would have felt life-changing.

Now I was listening to a man price the firm's need for silence.

"What do you want me to release?" I asked.

Victor looked toward Rachel.

She answered for him.

"Presumably everything."

Victor nodded.

"All employment-related claims."

"And Sterling?"

"No restriction on your lawful work."

"Public discussion?"

"Confidentiality around settlement terms and internal matters."

"Cooperation with the company's review?"

"We'd want reasonable cooperation."

Rachel asked, "And what does the firm want regarding documents and witnesses?"

Victor's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Standard provisions."

"Spell them out."

He didn't.

That told me there was more.

I leaned back.

"Why now?"

"What do you mean?"

"Why offer money before your investigation is complete?"

Victor's expression didn't change.

"Because prolonged disputes are expensive."

"More expensive than one hundred fifteen thousand dollars?"

"Potentially."

"Or more expensive than someone reviewing the emails?"

Silence.

Rachel glanced at me but did not stop me.

"What emails?" Victor asked.

I smiled slightly.

He knew.

I could see it.

He was testing how much I knew.

"I'll let your investigators answer that."

Victor's jaw tightened.

"Chloe, I hope you're not being influenced by people trying to protect themselves."

"You mean Jessica?"

"I didn't name anyone."

"You didn't need to."

"She's under review too."

"So are you?"

That landed.

Victor's expression sharpened.

"I am assisting the review."

"That's not what I asked."

Rachel intervened.

"Let's not turn this into speculation."

She looked at Victor.

"Send the proposal in writing."

He nodded.

"We will."

"Anything else?"

Victor hesitated.

Then he looked directly at me.

"Yes."

I waited.

"Whatever you believe about Marcus, understand this: he was under enormous pressure to make Sterling economically viable."

That sentence changed the room.

I heard it differently from everything before it.

Not politically viable.

Not strategically viable.

Economically.

"What does that mean?" I asked.

Victor realized immediately he had said too much.

"The pricing was aggressive."

"So?"

"So staffing needed to be efficient."

"Efficient enough to promise me full continuity while budgeting something else?"

His face went still.

There it was again.

The staffing discrepancy.

I had not told him Sterling had found it.

Neither had Rachel.

Victor had walked straight into it.

Rachel leaned toward the camera.

"Victor, what did you mean by that?"

He recovered.

"Only that major pursuits involve assumptions."

"Did you know the staffing model reduced Chloe's allocation after quarter one?"

Silence.

"Victor?"

"I don't have the model in front of me."

"You didn't answer."

He looked at me.

For the first time, the polished senior partner disappeared for half a second.

What remained was a man calculating exposure.

Then he said, "We should continue this through counsel."

Rachel nodded.

"I agree."

The call ended less than a minute later.

I stared at the blank screen.

Rachel was the first to speak.

"That was useful."

"He knew."

"About more than succession."

"About staffing."

"Possibly."

"He said economically viable."

"I heard him."

I stood.

"Marcus wasn't just trying to control visibility."

"No."

"Sterling's pricing may have depended on replacing me after signing."

"Do not jump ahead."

"I'm not."

I began pacing.

"The model reduces my allocation. Marcus promised Arthur I'd remain fully involved. Victor knew staffing needed to be 'efficient.' Jessica was being developed as my replacement."

Rachel let me finish.

Then said, "Those facts can fit several explanations."

"One of them is they planned to sell Sterling my involvement and deliver a cheaper team."

"Yes."

She did not soften it.

"That is one possible explanation."

My stomach turned.

This was bigger than my bonus.

Bigger than whether Marcus disliked my visibility.

If the proposal had been designed around one staffing plan while the client was told another, Sterling's decision to walk away suddenly looked even more justified.

I called Elena.

I gave her no details from Victor's confidential settlement discussion.

I said only that Sterling should ensure its counsel examined the staffing representations against the commercial model before the procurement record was closed.

Elena replied, "Already happening."

Of course it was.

Arthur had hired careful people.

At 2:18, Rachel received Victor's written proposal.

It was twenty-three pages.

The forty-thousand-dollar retention payment was included.

So was seventy-five thousand in severance.

Six months of benefits.

Mutual release.

Confidentiality.

Non-disparagement.

Then Rachel found the clause buried near the end.

I would agree not to encourage, assist, or voluntarily participate in claims or investigations involving the company unless legally compelled.

Rachel read it twice.

Then looked at me.

"They're asking you not merely to settle your claim."

"What are they asking?"

"To disappear from everyone else's."

I thought of Jessica.

Sterling.

The internal review.

The preservation requests.

Victor's careful answers.

"Can they do that?"

"They can ask."

"Should I sign it?"

Rachel gave me a flat look.

I laughed.

"Right."

She closed the document.

"We counter only if you want to."

"What would you do?"

"It's your decision."

I looked at the offer again.

One hundred fifteen thousand dollars.

Six months of benefits.

A clean exit.

Two days ago, I would have thought that was impossible to refuse.

But two days ago, I still believed my problem was losing a job.

Now I understood the real danger.

If I signed what Victor sent, I wouldn't just be ending a dispute.

I would be helping them close the door before anyone else could look through it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Refused the Silence Clause, and By Sunset the Firm’s Own Investigator Was Asking Who Had Approved the Sterling Staffing Numbers

I sent Victor Lang's message to Rachel before I replied.
