End-to-end."

Arthur looked at me rather than him.

"You?"

"Yes."

"Not until signing. Through execution?"

"Through execution."

Only then did he nod.

Marcus remembered that conversation.

He simply believed Arthur wouldn't.

My phone buzzed again.

Jessica.

Hey can you call me ASAP?

I ignored it.

Another message.

There was apparently confusion about staffing.

Confusion.

I opened the photograph Devon had sent from the celebration.

Jessica's name was still on my slide.

No confusion there.

At 7:29, Devon called.

I answered because he was not management and because, after eleven months of late nights together, he deserved more than silence.

"Are you okay?" he asked immediately.

"I'm fine."

"What happened?"

"I was terminated this afternoon."

He stopped speaking.

Behind him, I could hear restaurant noise: dishes, low conversation, somebody moving chairs.

"They fired you today?"

"About twenty minutes before Sterling."

"Jesus."

"Who told you I was?"

"Marcus said you'd transitioned off the project."

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

Not terminated.

Transitioned.

"Did he say I chose to?"

"Kind of."

"Devon."

"Yes. He made it sound like you were leaving and Jessica was taking over."

I let out a slow breath.

"What happened in the meeting?"

"I wasn't there. Jessica, Marcus, Priya, and two directors went. But everyone knows now."

"Knows what?"

"Sterling asked where you were."

I said nothing.

"Jessica apparently said there'd been a staffing transition. Sterling asked why nobody had told him. Then he started asking implementation questions."

"What questions?"

Devon lowered his voice.

"The East Bay conflict."

Of course.

"And phase-one integration."

I almost smiled.

"And something about the permitting delay."

There it was.

Three questions.

Not random questions.

Three subjects Arthur and I had discussed repeatedly.

Three tests designed to determine whether the person sitting in my chair actually understood the project.

"How did Jessica answer?"

"Badly."

"Define badly."

"She tried to go back to the deck."

I winced.

Arthur hated that.

"Marcus jumped in. Sterling asked him who would own the technical decisions after signing. Marcus said the team had broad bench strength."

I could picture Arthur's expression.

"Then?"

"Sterling asked whether you were still employed."

The kitchen suddenly felt very quiet.

"What did Marcus say?"

"Nobody's sure. Priya says he tried to dodge it."

"That sounds like Marcus."

"Then Sterling ended the meeting."

"Ended it?"

"Yeah. Apparently he said they couldn't proceed until leadership continuity was clarified."

I sat at the kitchen table.

The deal might not have been formally dead yet.

But it was bleeding.

Devon continued.

"Marcus told everyone afterward it was fine. Said Sterling was negotiating. That's why we still came to dinner."

"And now?"

"Arthur called him."

"What did he say?"

"I don't know. Marcus came back looking like someone had died."

My other phone line began vibrating.

Marcus.

"He's calling me now," I said.

Devon went silent.

"Are you going to answer?"

I looked at the boxes beside my door.

At the cactus.

At the evaluation I had saved weeks ago.

At Jessica's smiling photograph.

"Eventually."

"Chloe?"

"Yeah?"

"I didn't know."

"I know."

"I mean it. None of us knew."

"I know, Devon."

After we hung up, I let Marcus call two more times.

At 7:42, he sent:

PLEASE PICK UP.

Capital letters.

Marcus hated capital letters. He called them emotionally undisciplined.

I waited another minute.

Then I answered.

"Hello."

"Chloe."

His voice was breathless.

Not angry yet.

Panicked.

"Marcus."

"Where are you?"

"At home."

"Okay. Good. Listen, we have a situation."

I glanced at my half-eaten dinner.

"We?"

He ignored that.

"Sterling has paused the process."

"So Devon tells me."

There was a silence.

"You're talking to Devon?"

"He called my personal number."

"Chloe, this is extremely sensitive."

"So was firing your technical lead immediately before a client meeting."

His breathing changed.

"We don't have time for this."

I leaned back.

"Then why did you call?"

"Arthur is upset about the transition."

"Transition."

"Whatever you want to call it."

"I call it termination."

"Fine. The termination."

The word seemed difficult for him to say.

"He thinks we misrepresented staffing."

"You did."

"We did not misrepresent anything."

"Did you tell him before the meeting that I had been fired?"

Silence.

"Marcus?"

"We were going to explain the leadership structure after the presentation."

"So no."

"Chloe—"

"Did Jessica present herself as the engagement lead?"

Another silence.

I looked again at Devon's photograph.

"She did, didn't she?"

"This isn't about Jessica."

"It became about Jessica when you put her name on my work."

His voice hardened.

"I need you to be professional."

I almost admired the reflex.

Even now, he believed professionalism meant I should make his consequences disappear.

"What do you need?"

His tone softened immediately.

"I need you to call Arthur."

"No."

He seemed not to understand the word.

"What?"

"You terminated me."

"I know what happened."

"Apparently not."

"Chloe, this is an eight-hundred-million-dollar contract."

"Yes."

"People's jobs depend on it."

I looked at the termination letter still open on my tablet.

"Interesting argument."

He exhaled sharply.

"Don't do this."

"I'm not doing anything."

"Exactly. You're sitting there while the deal collapses."

"You instructed me to stop working."

"HR instructed you."

"You approved it."

Silence.

That silence was different.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

I continued.

"You signed my evaluation too."

His breath caught.

"What evaluation?"

"The one describing me as nonessential."

Nothing.

"The one saying my client contributions were replaceable through junior leadership development."

"Where did you get that?"

"The one recommending Jessica as my succession path."

"Chloe, where did you see that document?"

I smiled without amusement.

Of everything I had said, that was what frightened him.

Not the lie to Sterling.

Not the failed presentation.

The fact that I knew.

"Does it matter?"

"That document was confidential."

"So was the decision to fire me, apparently. At least from the client."

He said my name in the warning tone I had heard dozens of times.

This time it had no power.

I wasn't his employee.

He could no longer threaten my review, my promotion, my bonus, or my access to meaningful work.

He had removed every lever he possessed.

And only now had he realized it.

"I need you to contact Sterling tonight," he said. "Tell him you support the transition. Tell him Jessica has your confidence. Tell him you'll remain available during the handoff."

"No."

"We can pay you."

I looked toward the cardboard boxes.

"What?"

"A consulting fee."

I said nothing.

"Fifty thousand dollars," he said. "For tonight. Get Arthur back on the phone and stabilize the account."

The number would once have stunned me.

Now it sounded like evidence.

Marcus had spent years telling me the company couldn't afford a substantial raise.

Apparently it could find fifty thousand dollars in minutes when his own position was threatened.

I remained silent.

"Fine," he said. "A hundred thousand."

I almost laughed.

"One call, Chloe. A hundred thousand."

Still I said nothing.

Then, for the first time since I had known him, Marcus Hale abandoned command and reached for the word he had avoided all day.

"Please."

My backup phone lit up on the table.

Unknown number.

A voicemail transcription began appearing beneath it.

This is Arthur Sterling.

I stopped breathing for half a second.

Marcus continued talking.

I didn't hear him.

The message finished loading.

Arthur wanted to speak with me directly.

Not through the firm.

Not through Marcus.

Me.

"Chloe?" Marcus said. "Are you listening?"

I picked up the second phone.

"Marcus."

"What?"

"Arthur Sterling is calling me."

The silence on his end lasted less than a second.

Then panic tore straight through it.

"Do not answer him."

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Marcus Offered Me One Hundred Thousand Dollars for a Phone Call, Then Arthur Sterling Made a Far More Dangerous Offer

I let Marcus's call ring until it stopped.
