The navigation screen showed twenty-two minutes to Sterling Infrastructure's headquarters, traffic was thickening ahead of me, and I was mentally rehearsing the three questions Arthur Sterling was most likely to ask before anyone could reach slide ten.

Then I saw the caller's name.

Brenda Lawson — Human Resources.

Nobody from HR called at 2:07 on the afternoon of an eight-hundred-million-dollar final presentation to wish you luck.

I touched the steering-wheel control. "Chloe Bennett."

"Chloe." Brenda sounded as if she had rehearsed my name. "Are you somewhere you can speak privately?"

The question made my hands tighten around the wheel.

"I'm in my car. I'm heading to Sterling."

A pause followed. Not long, but deliberate.

"Could you pull over?"

A horn sounded behind me as the traffic light changed. I drove through the intersection, found the entrance to a shopping center, and parked beside a row of empty carts trembling in the wind.

"All right," I said. "I'm stopped."

Brenda inhaled.

"Your employment with the firm is being terminated effective immediately."

For several seconds, the sentence seemed to have no connection to me.

I looked through the windshield at a woman loading groceries into an SUV. A child sat in the cart kicking his sneakers against the metal frame. Somewhere beyond the parking lot, an ambulance siren faded into traffic.

"What?"

"I'm sorry, Chloe."

"Brenda, I'm presenting Sterling in less than half an hour."

"I understand."

"No. I don't think you do."

My voice remained quiet, which surprised me.

Sterling wasn't a routine account. It was the largest prospective contract our firm had pursued in years: a sprawling infrastructure program worth roughly $800 million. I had spent eleven months buried in demand models, implementation schedules, permitting assumptions, integration risks, and meetings with Sterling's technical staff.

Arthur Sterling knew me by name.

More importantly, he trusted me.

"Who authorized this?" I asked.

"The decision came through leadership."

"Marcus?"

Another pause.

Brenda had answered without answering.

I stared at the dashboard clock.

2:09.

The presentation began at 2:30.

"Does Sterling know?"

"I can't discuss client communications."

That was corporate language for no.

"Does Marcus understand that Arthur expects me in that room?"

"Jessica will be handling the presentation."

I actually turned my head toward the passenger seat as though somebody there might confirm I had heard correctly.

"Jessica?"

"Yes."

Jessica Cole was smart, polished, ambitious, and good at making senior executives feel interesting. She was also a junior associate who had spent perhaps six weeks close enough to the Sterling project to recognize the file names.

She could present slides.

She could not defend the assumptions underneath them.

"Brenda," I said, "Arthur Sterling personally asked me three days ago whether I would remain responsible through phase-one integration."

"I understand this is difficult."

"He asked Marcus the same question in June."

"I'm not in a position to discuss—"

"Marcus told him I would lead the work end-to-end."

Silence.

That silence told me something important.

Brenda knew.

Maybe not every technical detail, but she knew enough to understand the timing.

"What exactly are you instructing me to do?" I asked.

"You should not attend the meeting."

"Should I return to the office?"

"No."

"Should I contact Sterling?"

"No. Please do not communicate with clients on behalf of the company after termination."

"Should I complete a handoff?"

"That won't be necessary."

I looked at the leather portfolio beside me.

Inside were handwritten notes from every major Sterling meeting, a printed risk matrix, revised projections, and a list of technical concerns Arthur had asked me to address privately after the formal presentation.

Eleven months of accumulated context sat twelve inches from my elbow.

And they didn't want a handoff.

That meant this wasn't a mistake made five minutes ago.

Someone had planned it.

"Where are my belongings?" I asked.

Brenda hesitated.

"Your personal items are being packed."

The chill that went through me had nothing to do with the air-conditioning.

"Already?"

"I'm told they'll be delivered to your home."

So my desk was being emptied while I was still driving toward the meeting.

That answered another question.

Marcus had wanted me outside the building when it happened.

I thought about the previous week: Jessica requesting the newest presentation deck; Marcus asking me to forward my implementation notes "so leadership has redundancy"; IT suddenly asking me to reauthenticate several shared folders.

At the time, each thing had seemed irritating but ordinary.

Now they aligned.

"Is there documentation?" I asked.

"You'll receive the separation materials electronically."

"Send them now."

"Chloe—"

"Please send them now."

Another pause.

"I'll have them released."

I thanked her.

The politeness sounded strange even to me.

Then Brenda said, "For what it's worth, I'm sorry."

I looked at the highway beyond the parking lot. Somewhere along it, Jessica was probably heading toward the conference room with my deck.

"Is that personal or professional?"

Brenda didn't answer.

"I thought so," I said.

I ended the call.

For perhaps a minute, I did nothing.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Jessica.

Wish us luck!!! Big day ❤️

I read it twice.

The heart was almost impressive.

Another notification appeared immediately afterward. Marcus.

Need latest appendix assumptions ASAP. Jessica says version she has may be yesterday's.

I stared at his message.

He was asking an employee he had just fired to rescue the employee replacing her.

My thumb hovered above the keyboard.

Eleven months of habit told me to respond. Fix the problem. Protect the work. Keep the client from seeing internal dysfunction.

Then Brenda's instruction returned to me.

Do not communicate with clients on behalf of the company after termination.

No handoff necessary.

I locked the phone.

For the first time in eleven months, the Sterling account was no longer my responsibility.

That realization should have terrified me.

Instead, sitting in a grocery-store parking lot five miles from the most important meeting of my career, I felt something unexpected.

Relief.

Then the separation document arrived.

I opened it.

Near the bottom was the approval chain.

Brenda Lawson.

Finance.

Marcus Hale.

And beside Marcus's name was a timestamp from three days earlier.

He hadn't fired me because something had gone wrong that afternoon.

He had decided to remove me before the final presentation even began.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The Evaluation Marcus Never Expected Me to Read Explained Why Jessica Had Been Waiting for My Chair

Five miles from the meeting that had consumed almost a year of my life, my phone rang through the car speakers.
