one.

This was different.

A key to a new place.

I had signed a lease that morning on a house Sarah had never seen.

Small.

Two bedrooms.

A yard.

No history.

Sarah stared at the key.

“What is that?”

“I found a house.”

Her expression changed.

“For you?”

“For us, if you want.”

She did not touch the key.

Good.

“Are you asking me to move in?”

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled.

“Why?”

“Because I want to live with you.”

She stayed still.

“No marriage condition?”

“No.”

“No test?”

“No.”

“If it doesn't work?”

“We deal with it honestly.”

Sarah finally took the key.

Then asked, “Can I think about it?”

I smiled.

“Yes.”

Three days later she said yes.

We moved slowly.

Separate boxes.

Separate accounts.

One shared kitchen.

Two people choosing the same address with full knowledge of what that meant.

The first night, we ate takeout sitting on the floor because the dining table had not arrived.

Sarah looked around.

“This feels familiar.”

Our first apartment.

The card table.

The cheap food.

The beginning of the first life.

I shook my head.

“No.”

She looked at me.

“This is different.”

Sarah smiled.

“Yes.”

Later, while unpacking, she found the old wedding photograph.

“Where should this go?”

I considered.

Then took it from her.

“Box.”

“Still?”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

No argument.

No sadness performed.

The photograph belonged to history.

Our present did not need to display it.

That night, lying beside Sarah in a house neither Rainer nor Rusk had ever known, I realized I had made another choice.

Not marriage.

Not yet.

But a shared home.

Years earlier, Sarah had used our home to make her hidden life look legitimate.

This home had no such job.

It did not need to prove anything.

And for the first time, sharing an address with Sarah felt less like returning to something we lost than building something that had never existed before.

Click here to continue reading: PART 34: When I Finally Ask Sarah to
