I want to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I spent years believing every problem could be solved if I controlled enough variables.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds expensive to fix.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Then became serious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know how to have relationships without planning outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen don&#39;t plan this one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She caught herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We sat there almost two hours.<\/p>\n<p>No confessions.<\/p>\n<p>No hidden evidence.<\/p>\n<p>No new criminal layers.<\/p>\n<p>That alone felt miraculous.<\/p>\n<p>When we stood to leave, Sarah reached for her coat.<\/p>\n<p>I almost helped.<\/p>\n<p>Old habit.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>She noticed.<\/p>\n<p>Neither commented.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, cold wind moved through the trees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I hug you?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>The question froze me.<\/p>\n<p>Not the hug.<\/p>\n<p>The asking.<\/p>\n<p>Years ago Sarah would have simply embraced me.<\/p>\n<p>Assumed access.<\/p>\n<p>Marriage had made physical closeness automatic.<\/p>\n<p>Now she waited.<\/p>\n<p>I considered.<\/p>\n<p>Then nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hug was brief.<\/p>\n<p>Careful.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing romantic.<\/p>\n<p>Everything familiar.<\/p>\n<p>When we separated, neither of us pretended it meant more than permission for one embrace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoodbye, Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBye, Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I walked toward my car.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway there, I realized something.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent years trying to decide whether forgiveness meant letting Sarah back into my life.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that had been the wrong question.<\/p>\n<p>I did not need one permanent verdict.<\/p>\n<p>I could choose coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Then choose again later.<\/p>\n<p>A conversation.<\/p>\n<p>A hug.<\/p>\n<p>Distance.<\/p>\n<p>Closeness.<\/p>\n<p>No future decision had to be surrendered simply because I made one today.<\/p>\n<p>For most of my marriage, Sarah controlled information because she feared what my choices might produce.<\/p>\n<p>Now the only future I was willing to consider was one built from choices made one at a time.<\/p>\n<p>Freely.<\/p>\n<p>By both of us.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=30074\">Click here to continue reading: PART 30: One Ordinary Coffee Becomes a Series of Small Choices Until Sarah Finally Faces the Question Prison Could Never Answer for Either of Us<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>October 18 arrived cold and clear.
