marriage.

Boxes.

Books.

Furniture.

Photographs.

Hundreds of possibilities.

“Did Adrian give you anything before he disappeared?”

“Yes.”

My pulse increased.

“What?”

“A watch.”

I frowned.

“A watch?”

“His father's.”

“Where is it?”

“I gave it to you.”

I stopped breathing.

“When?”

“Our first anniversary.”

Memory arrived instantly.

A silver mechanical watch.

Older than the new models I usually wore.

Sarah told me she'd found it at an estate sale.

I had worn it for years.

Then the winding mechanism broke.

I put it away rather than repair it because the estimate seemed ridiculous.

“Sarah.”

“I didn't know it contained anything.”

“You gave me Adrian's watch.”

“Yes.”

“Told me it came from an estate sale.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I couldn't keep it around without questions, and I couldn't make myself throw it away.”

“So you gave it to your husband.”

“I was stupid.”

“No. You were dishonest.”

“Yes.”

I stood.

The watch was not at my apartment.

I knew exactly where it was.

Another box in storage.

Reynolds was informed within minutes.

Agents returned to the unit.

This time I did not complain about them going through my belongings.

At 4:38 that afternoon, Mora called.

“We found the watch.”

“Anything inside?”

“There's an irregularity in the case.”

My heart accelerated.

“What kind?”

“The inner backing has been modified.”

“Open it.”

“We are.”

Twenty minutes later she called again.

Inside the case, behind the movement, investigators found a tiny folded strip of waterproof material.

Not paper.

Microfilm.

Adrian had hidden something inside the watch before giving it to Sarah.

Sarah had carried it for years without knowing.

Then she had given it to me.

“Can you read it?”

“Technicians are working on it.”

“How much information can something that small hold?”

“More than you'd think.”

I sat in the protective apartment staring at my bare wrist.

For years, I had worn evidence from Sarah's previous life against my skin.

At meetings.

At birthdays.

At my father's funeral.

At dinners with Sarah.

An object from a vanished man ticking quietly beside a marriage built partly from his abandoned place.

By evening, Mora called again.

The film contained a sequence of account numbers, several dates, and one handwritten line photographed at microscopic scale.

The line was Adrian's.

Sarah if I disappear, Rusk didn't do it alone.

Below it were two initials.

One I recognized.

C.R.

Calvin Rusk.

The other I did not.

D.R.

“Who is D.R.?” I asked.

Reynolds answered.

“We don't know.”

But the tension in his voice told me something had changed.

Rusk had not been the top of Sarah's organization.

He had always been described as influential, dangerous, powerful.

Not the highest authority.

Someone had been above him.

Someone Adrian had feared enough to hide a name inside a watch.

And whatever D.R. represented might explain not only Adrian's disappearance, but why Rusk spent years terrified of Sarah's archive.

Click
