buried it.

James told the truth too late.

But late truth still mattered.

What she refused to allow was anyone using his confession to pretend Thomas Price alone created the damage.

James participated.

Margaret concealed.

Raymond expanded.

Peter facilitated.

Victor signed.

Martin altered.

Others benefited.

No single villain explained everything.

Dad looked at Victor.

Victor stared at the floor.

Mom said that was why she had not released James’s long?”

Martin shrugged.

“Eventually escheats or passes according to the contingency.”

“What contingency?”

Martin smiled.

“That’s the part you need me for.”

Dad leaned back.

“No.”

Martin blinked.

Dad placed the phone down.

Martin grabbed his own phone tighter.

“Edward.”

Dad stood.

Martin shouted through the glass.

“You don’t know where two million dollars spent fifteen years proving money is the least interesting thing in this story.”

Then he hung up.

Behind the glass, Harold smiled.

The sheriff asked, “You really don’t want to know?”

Dad looked at me.

“Oh, I absolutely want to know.”

I laughed.

He added, “But I’m not asking Martin.”

We could find it lawfully.

Through Mom’s documents.

Through Samuel.

Through court records.

No bargains.

No new lies.

Dad walked out.

In the corridor, Victor waited.

He had one final piece of news.

Richard’s information about Robert’s archive had produced a match.

Investigators identified the last active mirror account.

Dad smiled.

“David?”

Victor shook his head.

“No.”

“Who?”

Victor handed him the report.

The account was registered to a woman.

Not Carol Mason.

Not Anna Mercer.

Not any name we knew.

Dad read it aloud.

“Margaret Shaw.”

Harold frowned.

“Who is Margaret Shaw?”

Victor looked toward Raymond’s hospital wing.

“Raymond’s daughter.”

Dad stared.

“Raymond has a daughter?”

Victor nodded.

“Apparently.”

The account had received transfers from the network for twenty-six years.

Small amounts.

Regular.

Protected.

Never touched.

Dad’s expression hardened.

“Where is she?”

Victor looked at me.

“No one knows.”

Then he added the part that changed everything.

“According to the birth record, her mother was Clara Mercer.”

Dad stopped breathing.

<a
