losses.”

“I’m choosing what survives.”

“Same thing Martin says.”

Richard’s face tightened.

Victor held up the unsigned statement.

“You really think blaming Edward fixes your father?”

Richard looked at him.

“You don’t get to talk about fathers.”

“Why?”

“You abandoned yours.”

Victor absorbed that.

“Yes.”

Richard seemed surprised.

Victor continued.

“I abandoned everyone.”

No defense.

Richard looked away.

Victor said, “You want me to lie because a lie about Raymond shaped your life.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what shaped my life.”

“I know enough.”

Richard stepped closer.

“My father died terrified.”

“So did my mother.”

“Because of you.”

“Yes.”

Again, no defense.

That disarmed Richard more than denial would have.

Victor continued.

“Your father made fraudulent documents.”

“He was forced.”

“Maybe.”

“Raymond threatened him.”

“Maybe.”

“Martin told me—”

Victor interrupted.

“Martin told everyone exactly what they needed to stay angry.”

Richard stopped.

Victor looked at him.

“You know that now.”

Richard’s face changed.

The truth was visible.

He did know.

Maybe that was why he contacted police indirectly.

Why he offered Robert’s archive.

He was already separating himself from Martin.

Victor extended the blank statement.

“I’m not signing.”

Richard looked toward hidden police positions.

“Then why come?”

“To ask whether you want to spend the rest of your life defending a dead man by becoming exactly what killed him.”

Richard stared.

Victor almost smiled sadly.

“I have some experience with wasting decades.”

Richard’s eyes moved toward the stolen birth file.

Then he handed it to Victor.

No exchange.

No signature.

Just the file.

Victor took it.

Richard raised his hands.

Police moved in.

He did not run.

Dad watched from the command vehicle.

His shoulders lowered.

“He surrendered.”

The sheriff nodded.

Then a radio update came from the storage facility.

Robert’s archive existed.

Hundreds of records.

Photographs.

Forged documents.

Account lists.

And one active file created that morning.

Dad’s face tightened.

“What name?”

The officer read it.

VICTOR COLE.

Dad looked toward the plaza where the real Victor stood beside police.

“What was it used for?”

The answer came moments later.

A property transfer had already been filed.

Not Dad’s house.

Not the trust.

Not Halcyon.

A cemetery plot.

Dad frowned.

“Whose?”

The officer read the owner.

CLARA COLE.

Someone using Victor’s stolen identity had transferred legal control of Mom’s grave that morning.

And according to cemetery records, an exhumation permit had already been requested.
