Agents had found the envelope inside a locked metal cash box beneath old business records, expired identification documents and several thousand dollars in currency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it opened?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot before we recovered it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForensic processing is underway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked around the furnished apartment where I had spent the previous night. The place was comfortable enough, but everything about it felt borrowed. If he gives you this unopened, pay attention to what he asks afterward.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds gave a humorless smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I resumed reading.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah instructed me not to return home if she disappeared suddenly.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence made me stare at Martinez&#39;s warning in my memory.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#39;t go home tonight.<\/p>\n<p>Two warnings separated by different motives but pointing in the same direction.<\/p>\n<p>She told me to contact federal authorities rather than local intermediaries.<\/p>\n<p>She provided a reference number.<\/p>\n<p>Mora confirmed it corresponded to an old investigative tip line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was preparing to send me to law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why not go herself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>I knew the answer anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>Cowardice.<\/p>\n<p>Prison.<\/p>\n<p>All the reasons Sarah had already admitted.<\/p>\n<p>The next page concerned money.<\/p>\n<p>There was an account I had never heard of.<\/p>\n<p>Not in my name.<\/p>\n<p>Not Sarah&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>The numbered strings apparently provided access instructions.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped reading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs this criminal money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know yet,\u201d Reynolds said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it is, I don&#39;t want it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe weren&#39;t planning to hand you cash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah&#39;s note anticipated my reaction.<\/p>\n<p>The money isn&#39;t yours and I don&#39;t expect you to keep it. It is there because people will come looking for it. Let the government find it before they do.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mora nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe created an account people would search for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr diverted money she expected them to search for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell, who had joined us silently near the door, answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially several million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re still tracing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBallpark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween four and six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah and I had once spent an entire Saturday comparing refrigerators because she refused to pay an extra two hundred dollars for one with a water dispenser.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, somewhere in her hidden life, millions moved through numbered accounts.<\/p>\n<p>The absurdity hurt.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah wrote that the account was connected to something called Northstar.<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes that mean anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three investigators exchanged glances.<\/p>\n<p>That was answer enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthstar appears in Voss&#39;s recent statements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA reserve fund.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the organization?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistorically, considerably more than what may remain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah stole from them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe diverted their money and left me directions to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat appears to be what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would make me a target.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they believed you had access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRusk believes exactly that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one contradicted me.<\/p>\n<p>I continued reading.<\/p>\n<p>The map showed a section of rural Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>A road.<\/p>\n<p>A river.<\/p>\n<p>A mark near what appeared to be an abandoned industrial site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven&#39;t determined that yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah&#39;s note contained one instruction beside it.<\/p>\n<p>Do not go there yourself.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least she learned something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds did not smile.<\/p>\n<p>The next paragraph explained that the location contained material Sarah believed could protect me if everything else failed.<\/p>\n<p>Not protect her.<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat material?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou haven&#39;t searched it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA team is being prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy prepared? Why not already there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the site may be compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked again at the map.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bell answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn old paper mill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwned by who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShell company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConnected to Rusk?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re tracing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah&#39;s handwriting became tighter.<\/p>\n<p>If anyone tells you I disappeared because I chose them over you, don&#39;t believe it. If I leave alone, it means I could not get you out safely. I know that does not excuse what I did. I am not asking you to follow me.<\/p>\n<p>That last sentence mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Not because it redeemed the forged passport.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>But because it answered one of my prison questions.<\/p>\n<p>Had she planned to force me?<\/p>\n<p>At least in this contingency, no.<\/p>\n<p>Then came something stranger.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah told me to remember our honeymoon.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur honeymoon?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds looked interested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat specifically?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe just says remember where we stayed the third night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVermont.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHotel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBed-and-breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I searched my memory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPine Hollow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mora wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe drove too far, got lost, found a place because everything else was booked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah had teased me because I called seven my lucky number after we got the last available room.<\/p>\n<p>I looked back at the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Remember the third night. Seven was lucky once. It may be again.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould seven be a code?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I examined the numbered strings.<\/p>\n<p>One ended in 07.<\/p>\n<p>Another began with 7.<\/p>\n<p>Too many possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered something else.<\/p>\n<p>The inn had given us an old brass room key attached to a wooden tag.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah had kept the tag as a souvenir after the owner told us they were replacing the locks.<\/p>\n<p>It had sat for years inside a box with honeymoon photographs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah kept the room tag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it recovered during the search?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds began checking records.<\/p>\n<p>Several minutes later he looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo item matching that description was logged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the boxes I had packed when I sold the house.<\/p>\n<p>Some remained in storage.<\/p>\n<p>Not criminal storage.<\/p>\n<p>Mine.<\/p>\n<p>Ordinary boxes I had never completely unpacked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI might have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mora immediately said, \u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy storage unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re not going there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time I did not argue.<\/p>\n<p>Agents searched the unit that evening.<\/p>\n<p>I waited in protective housing while strangers opened boxes containing the remains of my marriage.<\/p>\n<p>At 9:17 p.m., Reynolds called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found the honeymoon box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe wooden tag was there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse increased.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything unusual?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe back panel separates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Of course it did.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah had hidden another thing inside another ordinary memory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA strip of paper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the archive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the seventh?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalvin Rusk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy separate those seven?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoordinates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Pennsylvania?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Jersey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere in New Jersey?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA private cemetery outside Princeton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA cemetery?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose grave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re checking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came twenty minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds called again.<\/p>\n<p>His voice had changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe coordinates point to a family plot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman who disappeared two months before the traffic stop.<\/p>\n<p>The woman whose disappearance had apparently pushed Sarah toward building her archive.<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie was never officially declared dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Sarah knew where she was buried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSearch warrant.
