me.”

Linda nodded.

“She loved you, idiot.”

Dad laughed.

Victor looked toward the ceiling.

“Clara still winning arguments fifteen years later.”

The letter continued.

Mom warned that if anyone found the room searching for Anna Mercer, the network had reached its final stage.

Then came an instruction.

Do not chase the identity.

Chase the person who knows where I put Edward’s route.

Dad frowned.

“My route.”

Harold leaned closer.

“Who knew?”

Mom wrote one name.

RAYMOND.

Everyone looked toward the sheriff.

Raymond was under guard at Cedar Ridge.

Dad stood.

“We need him.”

The sheriff called.

No answer from the assigned deputy.

Again.

Nothing.

Then Cedar Ridge reception answered.

Confusion.

The deputy had stepped away after receiving an emergency call about another resident.

Raymond Scott was missing from his room.

Dad closed his eyes.

“Not again.”

Security footage came through minutes later.

Raymond walked out voluntarily.

No struggle.

Beside him was a man wearing medical scrubs.

Face partly hidden.

But build familiar.

The sheriff zoomed.

Martin?

Impossible.

Martin had just been arrested.

Then Victor leaned closer.

“No.”

Dad looked at him.

“Who?”

Victor’s face hardened.

“Robert.”

Robert had supposedly surrendered.

The sheriff called the station.

Robert Bell was no longer in his holding room.

Released.

By paperwork.

A court transfer order.

Fake.

Again.

Dad stared toward the ceiling.

“Martin surrendered to distract us.”

Harold nodded.

“And Robert took Raymond.”

“Why?”

Because Raymond knew Dad’s emergency route.

The final clean identity.

The one Martin had not found.

Martin was not trapped.

He had divided the operation one last time.

He took custody.

Robert took the key.

Dad looked toward the ladder.

“Where is Martin now?”

The sheriff checked.

Transport had departed for county detention seven minutes earlier.

Dad’s face went pale.

“Stop it.”

The radio call went out.

No response from the transport team.

The sheriff swore.

Another staged transfer.

Another forged route.

Martin had escaped before reaching the jail.

Dad looked at Mom’s letter.

The sentence at the bottom seemed almost written for this exact moment.

If Martin reaches Edward’s route, he can become someone the system will never think to question.

I looked at Dad.

“Who?”

He turned the page.

One final name.

Dad’s face emptied.

“No.”

“What?”

He handed it to me.

Mom’s handwriting:

EDWARD’S EMERGENCY IDENTITY: HAROLD PIKE.

I stared at Harold.

So did everyone else.

Harold’s face went white.

Dad whispered, “Clara built my escape identity inside your legal records.”

Harold shook his head.

“I never knew.”

Martin did.

And if Robert forced Raymond to reveal the route, Martin could try to become Harold on paper.

Not some obscure dead person.

A living attorney.

Trusted.

Respected.

Connected to every legal proceeding now unfolding.

The perfect final identity.

<a
