clean.”

Dad frowned.

“With money?”

“With a new identity.”

Of course.

The master registry.

The clean ledger.

The reserve.

Martin did not merely want wealth.

He wanted the ability to erase Martin Vale.

A new legal life backed by real documents.

Money funded it.

Identity made it permanent.

Dad said, “Then the reserve is secondary.”

Rachel nodded.

“He needs one particular identity.”

“What identity?”

She looked toward Dad.

“Yours.”

Dad stared.

“Why mine?”

“Because Edward Cole is clean.”

Despite everything, Dad laughed.

“Debatable.”

“Legally clean.”

No convictions.

Established assets.

Historic beneficiary status.

A documented life.

A perfect identity shell.

And Victor’s resemblance to Dad had already created precedents for confusion.

Martin wanted to become Edward on paper.

Maybe not physically.

But through entities, signatures, beneficiary controls, legacy accounts.

Dad’s identity had financial authority across the old structures.

That was the real prize.

Richard suddenly looked frightened.

“He told me Edward’s identity would be retired after transfer.”

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“He lied.”

Martin never intended to retire it.

He intended to inherit it.

Below us, a floorboard creaked.

Everyone froze.

Then a voice came from inside the dark church.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar from the hospital.

Martin.

“Very good, Natalie.”

Dad stepped in front of me.

Martin appeared in the doorway.

No bandages now except one around his arm.

He held no visible weapon.

That made him more dangerous, not less.

He looked at Richard.

“You brought too many people.”

Richard said, “The arrangement changed.”

Martin smiled.

“It always does.”

Rachel stared at him.

“You used Daniel.”

Martin shrugged.

“Daniel used himself.”

Dad’s voice hardened.

“You planted Clara’s notebook for Vanessa.”

“Yes.”

“You let her believe I stole from my own family.”

“She already believed you favored Natalie.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

Martin looked at him.

“I gave her a direction.”

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“You almost destroyed her.”

“No.”

Martin shook his head.

“She did that herself.”

The cruelty of the truth made Dad flinch.

Martin continued.

“I simply offered opportunities.”

I asked, “And now?”

“Now I need you.”

“For what?”

He held up Mom’s second ledger.

“Translation.”

I stared.

“What part?”

Martin opened to the final pages.

“Clara left a route.”

“To where?”

“The original identity release.”

Richard frowned.

“You said the release was with Michael.”

Martin smiled.

“A release is with Michael.”

Richard’s face changed.

“There’s another.”

Mom had split even that.

Of course.

Martin looked at me.

“One cancels claims.”

He tapped the ledger.

“The other cancels identities.”

Dad frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Eleanor’s registry held false identities.

Mom apparently created a legal mechanism to invalidate entities built from them.

A mass revocation instrument.

If activated, hundreds of shell identities and linked accounts could be frozen.

Martin needed it before disappearing under one of those identities.

“So you want to destroy it,” I said.

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

Martin smiled.

“That is what Clara expected you to remember.”

I thought of her phrases.

Boring places.

Originals.

Names.

Things Dad could not throw away.

Mom’s layered safeguards.

Then I remembered something Vanessa had told me hours earlier.

Mom trusted different things in each of us.

Michael carried distance.

Vanessa eventually told truth.

I carried things.

But there was a third instruction Mom used with me constantly whenever I packed to move.

Not about apples.

Not doors.

Not photographs.

“Check the lining.”

Dad looked at me.

“What?”

Mom had sewn hidden pockets into suitcases when we were children.

Emergency cash.

Addresses.

Phone numbers.

Whenever we traveled, she said the same thing.

Check the lining before you throw anything away.

My stomach tightened.

The cedar box had a false bottom.

The atlas had a hidden panel.

Maybe the ledger itself—

“Give me the book.”

Martin smiled.

“Come get it.”

Dad said, “No.”

But I already knew.

Mom’s second ledger was not merely pages.

I could see the binding.

Thick.

Hand-stitched.

A cloth spine.

Lining.

“Martin.”

He looked at me.

“You’re holding the release.”

His smile vanished.

Richard stared at the book.

Rachel did too.

Martin looked down.

For the first time all night, he appeared genuinely surprised.

Then Dad smiled.

“Clara got you.”

Martin’s hand tightened around the ledger.

Police lights exploded across the churchyard.

Richard flinched.

Rachel raised both hands.

Dad pulled me behind him.

Martin turned toward the church.

The sheriff shouted.

“Drop the book!”

Martin ran inside.

Dad shouted after him.

“Martin!”

We heard footsteps pound across old boards.

Then a door slammed.

Officers rushed past us.

Richard dropped the transmitter.

Rachel knelt.

The church filled with shouting.

Then one final sound came from below.

A crash.

Glass.

Harold’s voice crackled through my receiver.

“They found an exit.”

Dad stared toward the side yard.

A cellar window stood open.

Martin had escaped again.

But in his hurry, he had left something behind.

Mom’s second ledger lay on the basement floor.

Its spine had torn open.

Inside the lining was a sealed legal document.

Harold lifted it carefully.

Across the top:

MASTER REVOCATION OF FRAUDULENT IDENTITIES AND DERIVATIVE CLAIMS.

Dad looked at me.

Mom had built the final exit.

Not for Martin.

For all of us.

And Martin had just lost it.
