In custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>No one had died.<\/p>\n<p>For once.<\/p>\n<p>Then one deputy emerged carrying a metal case.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor followed under escort.<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward Harold.<\/p>\n<p>Even from a distance, recognition passed between them.<\/p>\n<p>Harold whispered, \u201cI still can\u2019t believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad came outside moments later.<\/p>\n<p>His shirt was dusty.<\/p>\n<p>A cut ran along his cheek.<\/p>\n<p>I ran to him.<\/p>\n<p>He hugged me hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed against his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Victor came out behind him supported by an officer.<\/p>\n<p>His face was bruised.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked back.<\/p>\n<p>Neither spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad said, \u201cYou still owe me ninety thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor stared.<\/p>\n<p>Then laughed so hard he winced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInterest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll discuss it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was not forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>But it was the first hint that a future conversation might exist.<\/p>\n<p>The metal case contained the original registry.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff opened it only after photographs were taken.<\/p>\n<p>Names.<\/p>\n<p>Birth records.<\/p>\n<p>Corporate seals.<\/p>\n<p>Old trust papers.<\/p>\n<p>Historic signatures.<\/p>\n<p>Decades of fraud infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Harold looked through the first pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis plus Clara\u2019s ledger\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnds it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face fell.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor glanced toward the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard Bell is still missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Dad closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat depends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether Rachel told him where Clara hid the second copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecond copy of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe clean ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held up the evidence bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClara made two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The air changed again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn case Raymond destroyed one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is the other?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor looked toward Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she added, \u201cBut Richard does.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=30008\">Click here to continue reading: PART 23: Richard Bell Found Mom\u2019s Second Ledger Before We Did, and the Message He Sent Proved He Wanted More Than Money<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nobody outside moved.
