ordinary things became questions again.<\/p>\n<p>I went upstairs and locked the door.<\/p>\n<p>Then I took out Martinez&#39;s note.<\/p>\n<p>The words had warned me about Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>But Sarah, I now understood, had not been the only danger.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe not even the greatest one.<\/p>\n<p>She had been the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>Behind her stood people like Voss.<\/p>\n<p>People like Rusk.<\/p>\n<p>People willing to use identities, families and lives as tools.<\/p>\n<p>And if the government was right, one of those people had once considered me a problem requiring removal.<\/p>\n<p>The next afternoon, Reynolds called.<\/p>\n<p>His voice was tight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah agreed to cooperate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she ask for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo reduced sentence discussion. No conditions concerning herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked whether you were safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe told her yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReynolds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe told her what we believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked through the window at the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>The gray sedan was gone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re still watching Rusk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know where he is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Reynolds said, \u201cWe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My blood turned cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe missed a scheduled appearance this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lost him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are looking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lost him after he found out Voss was arrested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now Sarah is cooperating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Rusk know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For years, Sarah&#39;s hidden archive had protected itself by remaining buried.<\/p>\n<p>Now it had surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>Voss was talking.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah was talking.<\/p>\n<p>And Calvin Rusk, the man she once threatened with exposure if he touched me, had disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since the morning of the arrests, danger no longer belonged entirely to the past.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=30015\">Click here to continue reading: PART 12: When the Man Sarah Feared Vanishes, a Familiar Car Outside My Apartment Makes the Old Warning Feel Terrifyingly Present Again<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reynolds refused to discuss the instruction by phone.
