WHERE EDWARD KEEPS WHAT HE CANNOT THROW AWAY.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I can\u2019t throw away?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou keep everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething Mom knew you\u2019d never discard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad thought.<\/p>\n<p>Then his face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy old truck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one you still have?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first company truck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sold it decades ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told everyone I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apparently secrecy truly was genetic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe warehouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared toward the building.<\/p>\n<p>Dad pointed to the far end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehind the false wall in the old maintenance bay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same warehouse Rachel was standing inside.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had hidden the clean ledger inside something Dad could not bear to throw away.<\/p>\n<p>And Rachel had unknowingly brought Vanessa directly to it.<\/p>\n<p>The tactical officer\u2019s voice came through the radio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReady.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, Rachel said, \u201cLast chance, Vanessa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff gave the signal.<\/p>\n<p>The warehouse erupted with movement.<\/p>\n<p>Doors crashed open.<\/p>\n<p>Officers shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Dad pulled me behind a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>A gunshot cracked from inside.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Dad grabbed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVanessa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We waited.<\/p>\n<p>Shouting.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Then silence.<\/p>\n<p>The radio crackled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFemale suspect in custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHostages?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMale injured. Alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Vanessa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>I squeezed Dad\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>Finally:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVanessa Cole is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad sagged against the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, neither of us moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then officers brought Rachel out.<\/p>\n<p>She was handcuffed.<\/p>\n<p>Gray threaded her dark hair.<\/p>\n<p>She looked almost ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>She saw me.<\/p>\n<p>Stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Then smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped between us.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still think this ends with me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>She smiled again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel has Martin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff moved her toward the patrol car.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel twisted back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Daniel has Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad froze.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel called across the lot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should ask yourself why he wanted both men alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she was taken away.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa emerged next.<\/p>\n<p>Her face was bruised.<\/p>\n<p>Her hands shook.<\/p>\n<p>Dad crossed the distance between them.<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>For a second, neither knew what to do.<\/p>\n<p>Then Vanessa whispered, \u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hugged her.<\/p>\n<p>Not forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>But he held her.<\/p>\n<p>She began sobbing against his chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ruined everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked toward the warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou damaged things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He held her shoulders and made her look at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t the same as everything being ruined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant was carried out on a stretcher.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa watched.<\/p>\n<p>Then she stepped away from Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll tell the police everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>That was the first honest agreement they had reached all day.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff approached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found the maintenance bay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Together, we entered.<\/p>\n<p>Dust covered the rear section.<\/p>\n<p>Dad led us to an old wall.<\/p>\n<p>Behind stacked pallets was a narrow panel.<\/p>\n<p>Officers opened it.<\/p>\n<p>There stood the truck.<\/p>\n<p>Blue paint faded.<\/p>\n<p>Tires flat.<\/p>\n<p>Company logo barely visible.<\/p>\n<p>Dad touched the hood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClara hated this thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently she found a use for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We searched under police supervision.<\/p>\n<p>Glove compartment.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the seat.<\/p>\n<p>Old tools.<\/p>\n<p>Receipts.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph of Dad and Mom when they were young.<\/p>\n<p>Dad held it for a long moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered Mom\u2019s wording.<\/p>\n<p>Where Edward keeps what he cannot throw away.<\/p>\n<p>Not the truck itself.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the truck.<\/p>\n<p>Something Dad kept.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you never throw away?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked beneath the driver\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n<p>His hand disappeared under the metal frame.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled out an old toolbox.<\/p>\n<p>Rusty.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy.<\/p>\n<p>He opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Wrenches.<\/p>\n<p>Sockets.<\/p>\n<p>A cracked flashlight.<\/p>\n<p>And beneath the removable tray\u2014<\/p>\n<p>an envelope wrapped in plastic.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stopped.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written on it.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a small black notebook.<\/p>\n<p>The clean ledger.<\/p>\n<p>On the first page, Mom had written one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Money can be returned. A stolen name can ruin generations.<\/p>\n<p>Dad read over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger contained real names beside false identities.<\/p>\n<p>Accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Companies.<\/p>\n<p>Signatures.<\/p>\n<p>Every connection.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond.<\/p>\n<p>Robert.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Bell.<\/p>\n<p>Richard.<\/p>\n<p>Martin.<\/p>\n<p>Elliot.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Victor.<\/p>\n<p>And dozens more.<\/p>\n<p>Harold turned pages slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis can unwind everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then I reached the final section.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had added entries by hand.<\/p>\n<p>One was dated only days before her death.<\/p>\n<p>RACHEL KNOWS DANIEL CAUSED ELLIOT\u2019S CRASH.<\/p>\n<p>Another:<\/p>\n<p>RAYMOND IS HELPING ME CLOSE THE MIRRORS.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>VICTOR AGREED TO STAY AWAY UNTIL NATALIE IS SAFE.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared.<\/p>\n<p>Victor had not simply disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had asked him to stay away.<\/p>\n<p>The last entry was underlined twice.<\/p>\n<p>IF ANYONE RESTARTS THE MIRROR SYSTEM, FIND DANIEL FIRST.
