he?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Victor paused.

The sheriff traced the call silently.

Dad waited.

Victor finally answered.

“Daniel Price.”

The room tightened.

Dad looked toward the sheriff.

“Elliot’s brother?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Elliot didn’t die in an accident.”

Nobody moved.

Dad whispered, “What?”

Victor’s voice changed.

For the first time, I heard something like regret.

“Raymond killed him.”

Linda sat down.

Dad stared at the phone.

“That’s not true.”

“Raymond tampered with the car.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Elliot called me the out.

“Of Clara.”

The room went silent.

Dad whispered, “Clara was dying.”

“Exactly.”

“What does that mean?”

“A healthy person can be threatened.”

Victor’s voice softened.

“A dying person has less to lose.”

Dad closed his eyes.

Victor continued.

“Clara told Raymond she would expose everything before she died.”

Dad stared toward Mom’s boxes.

“She never told me.”

“She was protecting you.”

Dad almost laughed.

“I’ve heard that today.”

Victor said, “Daniel believes Raymond killed Elliot to stop him helping Clara.”

“And now Daniel is stealing from the restitution account?”

“I think he’s trying to recover what he believes Elliot was owed.”

Dad shook his head.

“This entire family needs to stop deciding what it’s owed.”

Victor was silent.

Then he said, “On that, brother, we agree.”

The sheriff signaled.

Trace narrowing.

Dad asked, “Where are you?”

Victor ignored him again.

“Natalie.”

“Yes.”

“Do not sign anything.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“Do not trust Richard Bell.”

“I don’t.”

“Do not trust Robert.”

“Fine.”

A pause.

“And do not trust Martin.”

Dad interrupted.

“Should we trust you?”

Victor laughed quietly.

“No.”

That answer felt more truthful than anything else he had said.

The sheriff received the trace result.

His eyes widened.

He wrote an address and showed Dad.

Dad stared.

The call was coming from less than a mile away.

From Dad’s own neighborhood.

Victor continued speaking.

“I need one thing from you, Edward.”

Dad’s face hardened.

“What?”

“Go to the lake tomorrow morning.”

Linda stood.

“No.”

Victor ignored her.

“Come alone.”

Dad laughed.

“You’ve been gone decades and your first invitation is an ambush?”

“If I wanted you dead, you’d already be dead.”

The sheriff motioned sharply for Dad to keep him talking.

Dad’s eyes narrowed.

“What’s at the lake?”

“The reason Clara chose Natalie.”

“What does that mean?”

Victor’s answer came softly.

“She wasn’t protecting the money from me.”

Dad stopped breathing.

“She was protecting Natalie from
