that.”

“Why would she think that?”

“Because Raymond showed her documents.”

Harold swore quietly.

Dad looked at him.

“You understand?”

“Maybe.”

Harold walked to the window.

“If someone forged the later amendment removing Edward as beneficiary, they could also create mother.”

Linda handed it to him.

Dad read.

His face shifted from anger to confusion.

“What?”

He handed the letter to me.

Margaret wrote that she had tried to keep peace between her sons and failed.

She admitted creating the trust to protect family property from Victor’s debts.

She also admitted allowing Raymond to manage it secretly because Edward would have insisted on helping his brother.

Dad sat down.

“She knew me.”

Linda nodded.

“But the trust changed.”

“Yes.”

“She removed me.”

“No.”

Dad looked up.

Linda shook her head.

“That amendment was fake.”

Harold leaned forward.

“Clara proved it?”

Linda nodded.

“Eventually.”

The false amendment had been used to convince Victor that Edward had taken control of their mother’s money.

Victor reacted exactly as someone expected.

He targeted Dad’s company.

But he did not begin by stealing.

He began by trying to recover what he thought had been stolen from him.

Dad looked stunned.

“So Victor believed he was taking back his own tried to blackmail Raymond.

Raymond responded by cutting him out of the network and pushing Martin into the bookkeeping operation instead.

“So Raymond was running it,” I said.

Linda shook her head.

“Not exactly.”

Dad groaned.

“There’s always another person.”

Linda looked at woman.”

Linda nodded.

“Eleanor Pierce?”

“No.”

“Margaret?”

“No.”

“Clara?”

Linda’s expression sharpened.

“No.”

Dad spread his hands.

“Then who?”

Linda looked at me.

“My mother.”

I stared.

“Our hands.

“Ruth and Margaret knew each other before you met Clara.”

Dad frowned.

“That’s impossible.”

“They grew up in neighboring history.

Linda explained.

Margaret Cole and Ruth Mercer inherited adjoining property through relatives.

A development group wanted to buy the combined acreage.

Ruth wanted to sell.

Margaret hesitated.

Eventually both agreed.

The money should have been divided cleanly.

It wasn’t.

“Raymond?” Dad
