8 – When Sarah Requests Nothing but One Conversation, I Must Decide Whether Hearing Her Voice Again Will Free Me or Reopen Everything

I did not contact Sarah.

For three months after reading the letter, I carried the possibility around like an object too heavy to throw away and too dangerous to keep close.

Some days I was certain I wanted to see her.

Other days the idea seemed absurd.

What could she tell me that the evidence had not?

The facts were established.

She had committed crimes for years.

She had entered our marriage already involved.

She had used the appearance of our ordinary life to protect herself.

She had also apparently argued against abandoning me, prepared a false identity so I could leave with her, defended my innocence after arrest, and written a letter admitting the things she had been too cowardly to say aloud.

Those contradictions belonged to her.

I did not know whether I needed to make them mine again.

Then an envelope arrived from a law office I recognized as having represented Sarah during parts of her criminal case.

I left it unopened on the kitchen counter for two hours.

When I finally read it, the message was brief.

Sarah was not asking for money, assistance, advocacy or renewed contact.

She had learned that certain evidence connected to Daniel Voss had been disclosed to me.

She understood that I might have questions.

If I wanted one conversation, her attorney could arrange an approved prison visit.

If not, Sarah would not ask again.

One conversation.

That restraint unsettled me.

The Sarah I remembered hated unfinished conversations.

She would return to an argument three hours later because she had thought of another point.

The woman described in the letter had no right to demand anything from me.

Apparently she knew that.

I put the letter away.

A week passed.

Then another.

I said nothing to Reynolds.

I said nothing to friends.

This decision felt too private for advice.

People who cared about me would naturally want to protect me.

Some would say never see her.

Others would say I deserved answers.

Both responses made sense.

Neither had to live with the consequences.

One evening I opened the drawer and placed three things on the table.

Martinez’s warning.

The attorney’s letter.

A copy of my divorce decree.

Three documents marking three different versions of the same relationship.

The warning told me the woman beside me was dangerous to trust.

The decree told me the marriage was legally over.

The new letter offered something less measurable.

A choice.

For the first time, Sarah had presented a door and left me free to decide whether to open it.

I called the attorney the next morning.

“I’ll meet once.”

The arrangements took several weeks.

When the day came, I almost canceled.

The prison was farther away than I had imagined, set beyond a stretch of highway that narrowed into open land and low industrial buildings.

I drove alone.

No dramatic weather.

No ominous sky.

Just a pale morning and trucks moving steadily along the interstate.

At security, I surrendered my phone and wallet according to procedure.

My hands remained steady.

That surprised me.

Years earlier, unfolding a seven-word note had made them shake.

Now I was voluntarily walking toward the woman who had caused the fear.

Perhaps that was progress.

Perhaps numbness.

I didn't know.

The visiting room was brighter than expected.

Plastic chairs.

Tables bolted down.

Vending machines against one wall.

Families speaking quietly.

A child laughing somewhere behind me.

Ordinary human noise inside an extraordinary place.

I sat.

Then Sarah entered.

For a second my mind rejected the image.

I had preserved her at the moment of arrest.

Forty years old.

Dark hair longer.

Posture brisk.

Eyes always tracking the next obligation.

The woman approaching me had aged.

So had I.

Her hair was shorter and threaded faintly with gray near the temples. She was thinner. The confidence I remembered had not vanished, but it had changed shape.

She stopped opposite me.

“Hi, Mark.”

The voice was exactly the same.

My chest tightened.

“Sarah.”

She sat.

For several seconds neither of us spoke.

There were hundreds of questions.

None seemed large enough.

Finally she said, “Thank you for coming.”

“I almost didn’t.”

“I assumed you wouldn’t.”

“Then why ask?”

“Because Voss was arrested.”

“You heard.”

“I heard enough.”

“And you knew I saw the letter.”

Her eyes lowered briefly.

“Yes.”

“Did you know he kept it?”

“No.”

“Did you think I received it?”

“For a while.”

“What changed?”

“You divorced me without mentioning anything in it.”

I almost smiled despite myself.

“That narrowed it down?”

“It did.”

Silence returned.

I looked at her hands.

No wedding ring.

Of course.

I had not worn mine in years.

Still, seeing the absence on her hand affected me.

“Why didn’t you send another letter?”

“Would you have believed it?”

The answer came easily.

“No.”

“That’s why.”

I studied her.

“Do you expect me to believe you now?”

“No.”

That was not the answer I anticipated.

Sarah leaned back slightly.

“I don’t expect anything from you.”

“Then why am I here?”

“Because you came.”

I felt irritation rise.

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Answer like you’re being clever.”

Her expression tightened.

“Sorry.”

The apology sounded genuine.

I hated that I noticed.

I placed my hands on the table.

“Were you involved before we met?”

“Yes.”

The directness hurt.

“How long?”

“About three years.”

“So every day we were together, you were lying.”

“About that part of my life, yes.”

“That is a large part.”

“I know.”

“Did the pharmaceutical job ever exist?”

“Not the way I described it.”

“Any of it?”

“I did consulting work connected to legitimate companies. before.”

“No.”

“What changed?”

“You did.”

I remained silent.

She continued.

“I thought if you had chosen to turn me in, then whatever happened next belonged to me.”

The statement sounded almost noble.

I refused to let it become that.

“You had six weeks to confess.”

“Yes.”

“You could have saved everyone time.”

“Yes.”

“You could have spared me from lying beside you every night while investigators built a case.”

“Yes.”

“You didn't.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Her eyes finally filled.

“Because I was a coward.”

There was nothing to argue with.

A guard announced that visiting time was nearly over.

The room shifted as other people began saying goodbye.

Sarah looked at me.

“I don't expect you to come again.”

“I don't know if I will.”

“That’s fair.”

I stood.

She remained seated.

For a moment I almost walked away.

Then one final question stopped me.

“Did you love me?”

Sarah closed her eyes.

When she opened them, tears remained but did not fall.

“Yes.”

“How much?”

A broken smile appeared.

“Not enough to tell you the truth when it mattered.”

That answer followed me all the way to the parking lot.

Not enough.

It was the first thing Sarah had said that felt neither like defense nor confession.

Just measurement.

She had loved me.

Perhaps.

But whatever love existed had been weaker than fear, habit, greed and cowardice for too many years.

Outside, I stood beside my car and looked back at the prison.

I had imagined answers might return the past to one clear shape.

They didn't.

Sarah had been more than the criminal file.

More than the wife I remembered.

More than the word cover.

None of those versions canceled the others.

I started the engine.

As I pulled away, one fact settled with unexpected clarity.

I had not come to decide whether Sarah deserved forgiveness.

I had come because some part of me still believed understanding her was necessary to understand what had happened to me.

Now I knew better.

Her motives belonged to her.

What happened next belonged to me.

And for the first time since the traffic stop, I could imagine a future in which Sarah's secrets no longer determined the direction of my life.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Leaving the Prison Should Have Ended My Questions, but One Detail Sarah
