The lobby had been renovated since the last time I was there. New security equipment, brighter lights, different chairs.<\/p>\n<p>The smell was the same.<\/p>\n<p>Coffee, carpet cleaner and institutional air-conditioning.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds met me upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment we simply looked at each other.<\/p>\n<p>Time had marked him more visibly than I expected. Cities.<\/p>\n<p>One line had been circled.<\/p>\n<p>C + M \u2014 alternate route only if approved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cC is Sarah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re confident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd M is me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting was not hers.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered strangely.<\/p>\n<p>Someone I had never met had once written my initial beside my wife\u2019s while discussing where we might disappear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is alternate route?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoss says Sarah wanted a contingency that allowed her to leave with you if the organization became compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe requested it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says she told them you were not expendable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the page.<\/p>\n<p>Not expendable.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase was not romantic.<\/p>\n<p>It should not have affected me.<\/p>\n<p>It did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s supposed to make me feel better?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause there\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There always was.<\/p>\n<p>Voss claimed Sarah\u2019s superiors disliked the idea of involving me in an escape. I knew nothing about the operation and had no useful role in it. Anything beyond that would be interpretation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated him for being right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me about the documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>A passport image appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Not a full passport. Some had expired by the time we recovered them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA safe-deposit box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMontreal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked back at the forged passport.<\/p>\n<p>Everything connected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was in the box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoss says emergency funds and clean documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSays?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t recovered it. Bringing you increased risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo they ordered her to leave alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe refused to go immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned fully toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean refused?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to Voss, she delayed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says she claimed she needed to resolve the situation with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Resolve.<\/p>\n<p>Another sterile word.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoss says he asked the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah told him she would not disappear without knowing what happened to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened despite myself.<\/p>\n<p>I sat again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas she going to tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she think she could explain ten years of lies and convince me to run?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she plan to drug me?
