Boxes had been pulled from shelves behind him. Papers covered the concrete.<\/p>\n<p>The gray metal case Dad described sat open near the rear wall.<\/p>\n<p>Empty.<\/p>\n<p>An ambulance was called.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff began asking Martin what happened.<\/p>\n<p>Martin answered only one thing clearly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked toward Vanessa and Grant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s eyes shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>Real fear.<\/p>\n<p>Not guilt.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprise.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho knows?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin coughed.<\/p>\n<p>The effort doubled him over.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff steadied him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows about Clara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad froze.<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped forward despite the sheriff\u2019s warning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Clara?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should\u2019ve burned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin gave a weak, almost pitying smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ambulance arrived before he could say more.<\/p>\n<p>Paramedics moved quickly.<\/p>\n<p>They cut away part of his sleeve, checked his pupils, wrapped the wound, and loaded him onto a stretcher.<\/p>\n<p>Dad tried to follow.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll get your chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe mentioned my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa stood several feet away looking shaken.<\/p>\n<p>Grant had lost whatever defensive confidence he possessed earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis wasn\u2019t us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>He repeated it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did stupid things. We didn\u2019t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou forged documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t attack anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongratulations on finding the lower boundary of your ethics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant flinched.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff began processing the storage unit.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s gray box had been opened.<\/p>\n<p>The old company papers were scattered, but not randomly.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had searched.<\/p>\n<p>Specific folders were empty.<\/p>\n<p>Harold crouched beside one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEdward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad joined him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold pointed to a handwritten label.<\/p>\n<p>M. She could have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found Mom\u2019s notebook in a box from this unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you attic because I didn\u2019t want you angry that I\u2019d been here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came here without telling me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa looked ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant and I were having money problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Another layer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow bad?\u201d Dad asked.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Grant did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad waited.<\/p>\n<p>Grant sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe business failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad knew Grant had owned a small contracting company.<\/p>\n<p>He apparently hadn\u2019t known the scale of its collapse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe owed suppliers,\u201d Grant said. \u201cTaxes. Two loans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout three hundred thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked stunned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou would\u2019ve said no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you always lecture first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pettiness of the complaint sounded obscene beside everything else.<\/p>\n<p>Dad shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you searched my storage unit for something valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was looking for old bonds. Certificates. Anything you might have forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were looking for my money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She finally said it without decoration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face softened for one strange second.<\/p>\n<p>Not forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Relief.<\/p>\n<p>The truth, even an ugly truth, was cleaner than another lie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you found your mother\u2019s notebook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa looked toward the scattered papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything about Martin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis initials. Dates. Some amounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Clara?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was one sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat sentence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me first.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin knows where the second account went.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat second account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold looked through the scattered pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould there have been another company account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot officially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff overheard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnofficially?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad gave him a tired look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ran an equipment company, not an international cartel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even the sheriff almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Harold continued searching.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed a piece of paper beneath an overturned box.<\/p>\n<p>Half burned.<\/p>\n<p>Not old damage.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh.<\/p>\n<p>One edge was still black and brittle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He came over.<\/p>\n<p>We unfolded what remained.<\/p>\n<p>Only a few lines were readable.<\/p>\n<p>One looked like a bank routing number.<\/p>\n<p>Another contained the name CLARA COLE.<\/p>\n<p>Dad took the page.<\/p>\n<p>His fingers trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s her handwriting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He touched one of the numbers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wrote sevens like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff photographed it.<\/p>\n<p>Harold wrote down the surviving numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed something else.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, in different handwriting, were three words.<\/p>\n<p>ASK ELLIOT PRICE.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know him too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElliot was my business partner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word was was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSixteen years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold looked troubled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCar accident?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore or after Clara died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight months after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does Mom\u2019s paper say to ask a dead man?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad folded the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he wasn\u2019t dead when she wrote it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The storage unit suddenly felt smaller.<\/p>\n<p>Dad sat on an overturned crate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen your mother found the missing company money, Elliot helped her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never said that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEdward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew he helped with the internal review. I didn\u2019t know Clara had contacted him before telling me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Mom, Martin, and Elliot all knew about some second account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Dad didn\u2019t,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at the burned paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff asked whether Elliot had family.<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAtlanta, last I heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stayed in touch?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOccasionally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff wrote down the information.<\/p>\n<p>Then one deputy called from outside.<\/p>\n<p>They had found tire marks behind the unit.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh.<\/p>\n<p>A vehicle had driven across the soft ground rather than leaving through the main lane.<\/p>\n<p>Grant stared at them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means whoever attacked Martin left before we arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d the sheriff said.<\/p>\n<p>Grant looked at Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>She whispered, \u201cMartin said somebody knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad held up the burned paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomebody knows about whatever Clara found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we brought Martin back into Dad\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one corrected her.<\/p>\n<p>The ambulance had already left.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff told us Martin would be interviewed again if he was stable enough.<\/p>\n<p>He also made something else clear.<\/p>\n<p>Until they knew who had attacked Martin, none of us should assume the fraudulent estate scheme was the only danger.<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then asked to see the rest of the papers.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff permitted it after they were photographed.<\/p>\n<p>We spent nearly an hour sorting.<\/p>\n<p>Most documents were ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>Old invoices.<\/p>\n<p>Payroll records.<\/p>\n<p>Tax filings.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance forms.<\/p>\n<p>Then Harold found a thin envelope beneath the metal case.<\/p>\n<p>It had been taped to the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Dad recognized Mom\u2019s handwriting immediately.<\/p>\n<p>EDWARD\u2014ONLY IF MARTIN COMES BACK.<\/p>\n<p>Dad sat down.<\/p>\n<p>For twenty-two years, that envelope had waited for a condition none of us knew existed.<\/p>\n<p>Now Martin had come back.<\/p>\n<p>Dad opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were two pages.<\/p>\n<p>He read the first alone.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed from confusion to disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He handed it to me.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had written the letter near the end of her life.<\/p>\n<p>She apologized for keeping something from Dad.<\/p>\n<p>She said she had made that choice because she believed knowing would put him in danger.<\/p>\n<p>She had discovered that the missing company money had not simply been stolen.<\/p>\n<p>It had been moved.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden temporarily.<\/p>\n<p>Then replaced.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReplaced?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold took it.<\/p>\n<p>Mom wrote that Martin had participated, but he had not acted alone.<\/p>\n<p>Someone inside the company had been using the business accounts to conceal money that came from somewhere else.<\/p>\n<p>The company had been a pass-through.<\/p>\n<p>Dad whispered, \u201cMoney laundering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold nodded.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>She had traced one set of transfers to a second account.<\/p>\n<p>Elliot Price helped her.<\/p>\n<p>Then Elliot became frightened.<\/p>\n<p>He told her to stop asking questions.<\/p>\n<p>She did.<\/p>\n<p>At least, she told him she did.<\/p>\n<p>The final paragraph was different.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting shook.<\/p>\n<p>Dad read it aloud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Martin ever comes back to you, it means whoever controlled him believes the old records still exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad lowered the page.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa whispered, \u201cControlled him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was another sentence beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if he asks about the ledger, do not trust him until he tells you who paid Elliot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked up.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He answered.<\/p>\n<p>His expression shifted almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat hospital?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then turned toward us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin regained consciousness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff looked directly at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked for Natalie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every head turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he\u2019ll tell the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat truth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff repeated Martin\u2019s words exactly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018Tell Natalie her mother left the last proof with her.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a
