And you think you got stuck with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s what you believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tears rose in her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave up things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did she.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told her to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa did too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Natalie got the job in Chicago, she almost turned it down because your mother was sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered that night.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had been asleep in the next room.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had told me to take the job.<\/p>\n<p>I had cried.<\/p>\n<p>He had practically packed the car himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe thought leaving made her selfish,\u201d Dad said. \u201cI told her staying because of guilt would be worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>I had never told her.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stayed because your life was here. That mattered to me. But I never asked you to sacrifice yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa\u2019s voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou needed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why does she get everything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause by the time I changed the trust, you were stealing from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence ended the argument.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa sank into a chair.<\/p>\n<p>Grant resumed the story.<\/p>\n<p>Martin had convinced them the estate was larger than Dad admitted.<\/p>\n<p>Then he convinced them that waiting for Dad\u2019s natural death could leave them with nothing because of the trust Dad might create.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich I did create,\u201d Dad said.<\/p>\n<p>Grant nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why Martin said the transfer had to happen first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold held up the forged deed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore the trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the transfer is dated three weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was supposed to look older.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s eyes sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd why this morning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Martin found out Harold was involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou met me yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy assistant. You. Me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd someone saw your car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin called last night and said the trust could be recorded today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>He checked his watch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy office submitted it electronically at eight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>Grant looked stunned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen it\u2019s done?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trust is established.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad glanced at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the deadline was real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant nodded miserably.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin said if we filed the property transfer first, we could create a conflict over ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA fraudulent conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd while everyone fought over it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe developer would proceed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were going to sell my home while I was still alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant muttered, \u201cMartin said the transfer would hold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff asked the obvious question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow does Edward being dead fit into that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Grant looked at Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Dad leaned against the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019d like that answer too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa began shaking her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t part of the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat wasn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaying you died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called Natalie and said exactly that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She covered her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you weren\u2019t home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe came here before six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour truck was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad and I exchanged glances.<\/p>\n<p>We had taken my car to pick up breakfast ingredients the evening before, leaving Dad\u2019s truck at Harold\u2019s after their meeting because of a brake issue.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa had expected it to be here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we saw the truck was gone,\u201d she said, \u201cGrant thought maybe Martin had done something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would Martin have done?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVanessa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stood abruptly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was acting strange last night. He kept saying everything would be simpler if you weren\u2019t around to challenge the signatures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one moved.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff\u2019s voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExact words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018Paperwork only argues when people are alive to argue back.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A silence heavier than any before settled over the house.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you continued dealing with him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought he was being dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou paid him twelve thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave him access to my history, my property, my family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Grant said, \u201cThat\u2019s why I met him last night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa spun around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me it was about the papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut not only that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe scared me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked if Edward was alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked whether he still drove out to the lake in the mornings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold all the way down my arms.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had gone to that lake almost every Wednesday since Mom died.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow was Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d the sheriff asked.<\/p>\n<p>Grant rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked whether Edward still kept the spare key under the workbench.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked toward the garage.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff moved immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He left with one deputy.<\/p>\n<p>We waited.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>A minute later, footsteps returned.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff appeared in the doorway holding a small plastic bag.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a key.<\/p>\n<p>Dad frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff looked at Grant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was taped beneath the workbench.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it open?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff held it up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot sure yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Then his face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStorage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe old warehouse unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour storage key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s the same type.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa whispered, \u201cMartin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff asked for the storage address again.<\/p>\n<p>Dad gave it.<\/p>\n<p>This time, no one argued about going.<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen minutes later, two vehicles pulled onto the county road leading toward the old industrial district.<\/p>\n<p>I rode beside Dad.<\/p>\n<p>He barely spoke.<\/p>\n<p>As we approached the storage complex, the sheriff\u2019s vehicle slowed.<\/p>\n<p>The gate stood open.<\/p>\n<p>Dad frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt shouldn\u2019t be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We drove inside.<\/p>\n<p>Rows of metal doors stretched beneath the gray sky.<\/p>\n<p>Dad pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnit forty-two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff stopped twenty yards away.<\/p>\n<p>The door to unit forty-two was already raised.<\/p>\n<p>Something lay on the concrete just inside.<\/p>\n<p>At first I thought it was a pile of clothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad grabbed my arm.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff shouted for everyone to stay back.<\/p>\n<p>He ran toward the unit.<\/p>\n<p>The shape moved.<\/p>\n<p>A man rolled onto his side.<\/p>\n<p>Blood covered one sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>Dad whispered the name before anyone reached him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=29986\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Martin Was Still Alive Inside the Storage Unit, and What He Whispered Turned the Family Fraud Into Something Far More Dangerous<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The sheriff asked Grant to repeat himself.
