I nearly ignored the number because I no longer had it saved. The area code looked familiar, but familiarity alone no longer persuaded me to answer unknown calls. I let it ring twice, then a third time, before something in my memory connected the digits to the years I had spent learning not to dismiss small inconsistencies.

“Mark?” Reynolds said when I answered.

His voice had changed. It sounded rougher, older, but unmistakably his.

“I didn’t expect to hear from you.”

“I didn’t expect to call.”

That sentence was enough to make me sit down.

I had been standing beside my kitchen counter with a mug in one hand, half listening to rain strike the windows. The apartment I had once considered temporary had gradually become home. New furniture, new routines, photographs that had nothing to do with Sarah. Reynolds’s voice made all of that feel suddenly thin.

“What happened?”

“Nothing immediate,” he said. “You’re not in danger.”

The fact that he led with that reassurance bothered me.

“Then why are you calling?”

“There’s been movement in one of the related cases.”

I closed my eyes. “Sarah?”

“No. She’s still where you know she is.”

I realized I had been holding my breath and released it carefully. “Then what case?”

Reynolds reminded me that Sarah’s prosecution had been only one part of a larger investigation. Several people had been arrested with her. Others had been identified later. A few had disappeared before warrants could be executed. The government had continued following money, aliases and dormant accounts long after Sarah’s sentencing.

“One of the men we never found was picked up overseas six weeks ago,” he said.

“Who?”

“Daniel Voss.”

The name meant nothing at first.

Then something surfaced.

David.

One of the supposed coworkers Sarah had mentioned throughout our marriage had been named David.

“Was he connected to Sarah?”

“Closely.”

I set the mug down.

“How closely?”

“That’s partly why I’m calling.”

I hated that answer. Reynolds had always been careful with language. If he said partly, there was more behind it.

“Tell me.”

“Voss had documents with him when he was arrested. Some were digital. Some physical. We’re still sorting through everything.”

“And?”

“Your name appears.”

The old fear returned with embarrassing speed.

Four years vanished.

I was back in the house, hearing Sarah’s work phone vibrate. Back on the shoulder of Route 35. Back in the bathroom unfolding a note with shaking hands.

“I thought you cleared me.”

“We did.”

“Then why is my name in his files?”

“That’s what I’d like to discuss in person.”

“No.”

Silence.

Then Reynolds said, “All right.”

“I spent years being summoned into rooms where someone told me another part of my marriage wasn’t real. That explanation hurt, but it was clean. Cruel, but coherent.

If she had planned to bring me with her, the structure changed.

Not enough to redeem her.

Enough to complicate everything.

“What exactly does the file say?”

“I can’t send the documents yet.”

“Read me the line.”

“I can summarize.”

“Read it.”

Another pause.

Then Reynolds said, “There’s a handwritten note believed to be Voss’s.
