Two weeks later, he produced records that made it look as though your mother had authorized some of the transfers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Edward realized the records were altered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne authorization was dated on a day your mother was in surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The certainty of that fact settled the question.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa\u2019s expression faltered.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin had expected no one to remember the date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember every date from that year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember every hospital room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa sat down without being asked.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe couldn\u2019t prove Martin stole everything, but we proved enough to force his resignation.
