At first, nothing about the suggestion seemed sinister. Mom had died. Dad was getting older. Vanessa lived nearby and presented herself as the child willing to handle unpleasant practical matters.<\/p>\n<p>She brought Richard Bell to the house.<\/p>\n<p>Richard introduced himself as an attorney familiar with estate planning.<\/p>\n<p>He arrived with several documents.<\/p>\n<p>Dad signed routine forms but refused to sign anything involving control of the property until Harold reviewed it.<\/p>\n<p>That precaution changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>Harold discovered clauses that would have given Vanessa broad authority over Dad\u2019s assets.<\/p>\n<p>One document could potentially have allowed her to manage property if Dad were declared unable to manage his own affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Dad refused.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa became furious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said I was stubborn,\u201d he told me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds mild.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt became less mild.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said if I wouldn\u2019t let her help voluntarily, she would find another way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you still didn\u2019t tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why protect her from me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t protecting her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was protecting myself from admitting what she might be doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold opened the black folder again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He removed a medical power-of-attorney form.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s signature appeared at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>At first glance, it looked genuine.<\/p>\n<p>At second glance, it didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>The final curve of the surname was too smooth. Dad\u2019s real signature always ended abruptly because arthritis stiffened his index finger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s forged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Harold pointed to the date.<\/p>\n<p>Months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the property transfer isn\u2019t the first forged document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Harold said.<\/p>\n<p>Dad explained what he now believed Vanessa had been attempting.<\/p>\n<p>First, create a record that he was becoming forgetful.<\/p>\n<p>Then obtain authority over financial decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Then establish enough paperwork to make control of his assets appear legitimate.<\/p>\n<p>The false story did not require everyone to believe Dad was completely incompetent.<\/p>\n<p>It only required enough institutions to hesitate when he objected.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Vanessa telling him he forgot things.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered her saying she was the one who worried about him because she lived nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Every familiar family complaint now seemed to have a second meaning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere does Grant fit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s expression darkened.<\/p>\n<p>Harold reached into the folder.<\/p>\n<p>An email.<\/p>\n<p>Grant had sent it to Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>The subject concerned what they would do after Dad signed.<\/p>\n<p>The body was brief.<\/p>\n<p>Once they had control of the property, Grant wanted the house sold quickly.<\/p>\n<p>He also wanted me kept away until the transaction was too advanced to stop easily.<\/p>\n<p>I read the email again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you get this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVanessa printed several messages,\u201d Harold said. \u201cYour father found copies among papers she left behind during one of their meetings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would she print something this incriminating?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople rarely believe they\u2019re creating evidence while they still think they\u2019re going to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stood and walked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>For a while, nobody disturbed him.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cWe\u2019re going home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold gathered the folders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sheriff asked us to come anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou spent months handling this alone because you were ashamed to tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to protect me from it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time that morning, something like pride crossed his expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We returned with Harold.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff met us near the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>A patrol vehicle stood outside.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s front door was open.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa and Grant were in the living room.<\/p>\n<p>When Vanessa saw Dad, she jumped up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She rushed toward him.<\/p>\n<p>He raised one hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I had never seen my sister look so small.<\/p>\n<p>Her hair was uncombed. Mascara had smudged beneath her eyes. Grant stood several feet behind her, pale and rigid.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa looked from Dad to Harold to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad removed his coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been listening for months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>Dad walked farther into the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know about the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know about Richard Bell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant looked toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff noticed.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know about the forged medical document. I know about the property transfer. And I know you contacted a developer before I was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, that isn\u2019t what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to prepare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor my death?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy stealing forty-eight thousand dollars?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa recoiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t steal it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would you call it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was paying expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich expenses?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Grant.<\/p>\n<p>That was her mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Dad saw it.<\/p>\n<p>So did the sheriff.<\/p>\n<p>Grant immediately said, \u201cDon\u2019t look at me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa\u2019s mouth opened.<\/p>\n<p>Dad turned toward Grant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also have your email.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat email?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one about selling my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what you\u2019re talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one telling Vanessa to keep Natalie away until the transfer was finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you deleted those.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Grant realized what he had said.<\/p>\n<p>Harold let out a slow breath.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>Grant looked furious now, less at Dad than at Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis whole thing was her idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa turned on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re the one who dealt with Bell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found the developer!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you asked me to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Dad would never leave us anything if Natalie kept manipulating him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Dad did not.<\/p>\n<p>He watched them destroy their own alliance one accusation at a time.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff interrupted before either could say more.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that nobody was being allowed to remove documents from the property. The questionable signatures and financial records would be examined. Until ownership and possible fraud were sorted out, the house remained Dad\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa started crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>For a fraction of a second, I saw the father he had been when we were children\u2014the man who carried Vanessa inside after she fell from her bicycle, who sat beside her through a fever, who drove three hours to retrieve her from college after her first serious breakup.<\/p>\n<p>That history had not vanished.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that was what made the next moment so painful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent years wondering why you seemed angry with me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept thinking I had failed you somehow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI taught you that I would always rescue you. Every debt. Every mistake. Every bad decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomewhere along the way, you stopped seeing that as love and started seeing it as something you were owed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa whispered, \u201cI love you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>Then he added, \u201cBut you also loved what you thought my death would give you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Grant stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is ridiculous. You were going to leave everything to Natalie anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant spread his hands. \u201cThen you understand why Vanessa was upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou forged documents because you were worried my will might be unfair?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t forge anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you merely planned the sale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou both made the same mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought this house was the valuable thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed around the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe walls. The acreage. The truck. The boat. The accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have had me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa began sobbing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have come here for dinner. You could have gone fishing with me. You could have called without asking about paperwork. You could have had years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He touched his chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became unbearably quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you behaved as though I was already gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff asked Vanessa and Grant to remain while he reviewed the documents discovered in the garage.<\/p>\n<p>Dad turned away from them.<\/p>\n<p>I followed him into the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Our breakfast dishes were still on the table.<\/p>\n<p>His toast had gone cold.<\/p>\n<p>The coffee pot had switched itself off.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stood over the sink with both hands braced against the counter.<\/p>\n<p>I touched his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>He did not turn around.<\/p>\n<p>After a while, he said, \u201cI thought changing the trust yesterday would end it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may protect you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He finally faced me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought once the money was protected, I could pretend this was only about money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>Money could be returned.<\/p>\n<p>Documents could be canceled.<\/p>\n<p>A house could be protected by lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>The harder problem was standing in his living room wearing his daughter\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>Harold appeared in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEdward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked up.<\/p>\n<p>Harold held another sheet of paper.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff stood behind him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat now?\u201d Dad asked.<\/p>\n<p>Harold did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>He placed the page on the table.<\/p>\n<p>It was a copy of the disputed property transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Below Dad\u2019s forged signature was another signature.<\/p>\n<p>A witness.<\/p>\n<p>Dad leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>I read the name.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Bell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat attorney witnessed Dad signing something Dad says he never signed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at the page.<\/p>\n<p>Then the sheriff said, \u201cThere\u2019s another problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He placed a small bank record beside it.<\/p>\n<p>A payment had been made six weeks earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Not from Vanessa to Richard.<\/p>\n<p>Not from Grant.<\/p>\n<p>From one of Dad\u2019s own accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Forty-eight thousand dollars had been missing.<\/p>\n<p>Now we knew at least some of it had not simply disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had been using Dad\u2019s money to finance the attempt to take control of Dad\u2019s property.<\/p>\n<p>And according to the next document Harold unfolded, Richard Bell had not been the only person paid.<\/p>\n<p>There was a second name.<\/p>\n<p>Dad read it.<\/p>\n<p>His face drained of color.<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard the name before.<\/p>\n<p>He had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lowered himself into a chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the living room where Vanessa and Grant were waiting.<\/p>\n<p>Then back at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone Vanessa should never have known.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=29978\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Dad Recognized the Second Name Immediately, and the Secret Behind It Reached Back to the Year Our Mother Became Ill<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harold kept Richard Bell on speaker. \u201cMr. Bell,\u201d he said, \u201cyour client\u2019s father is sitting in my office.\u201d There was a pause.
