Dad remained seated at the kitchen table with his coffee raised halfway to his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Vanessa said, \u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t funny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad took a drink. \u201cI agree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant\u2019s voice came through next. \u201cEdward?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad set down his mug. \u201cYou generally call me Dad when you\u2019re trying to borrow something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Under any other circumstances, I might have laughed. Dad had always used dry humor when he was angry. The calmer he sounded, the more careful everyone else needed to become.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa recovered first. \u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy kitchen, Vanessa. The room with the stove. You\u2019ve been in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked around as though checking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe evidence seems fairly strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression went flat. \u201cYou called Natalie and told her I was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Dad waited.<\/p>\n<p>He had raised three children\u2014Vanessa, me, and patience itself, as Mom used to joke. He knew silence could force the truth out more effectively than shouting.<\/p>\n<p>Grant finally spoke. \u201cWe received information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat information?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat paperwork announces a man\u2019s death before anyone has seen his body?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned closer. \u201cVanessa, you said Grant spoke to someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You were very specific.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had just gotten terrible news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad tapped one finger against the table. \u201cNews from whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The silence returned.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about the confidence in Vanessa\u2019s voice minutes earlier. She had not sounded like someone stumbling through shock. She had sounded organized. She knew who supposedly owned the house. She knew what the alleged will said about me. She had already decided what I could and could not remove.<\/p>\n<p>And she was inside Dad\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad,\u201d I said quietly, \u201cask her when she got there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat time did you enter my house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa answered reluctantly. \u201cAround six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad checked the clock above the refrigerator. It was 6:49.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou arrived thirty minutes before calling Natalie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe needed to see what was going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt six in the morning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you get inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa did have a front-door key. Dad had given it to her years ago after Mom became sick. It was meant for emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently death qualified, even when the dead person had not participated.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued. \u201cWhat did you do after entering?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant muttered something.<\/p>\n<p>Dad heard him. \u201cGrant, speak clearly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe checked the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you didn\u2019t find me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That part was technically possible. Dad\u2019s bedroom was empty because he had been downstairs with me since shortly after six. Vanessa and Grant could have entered through the front while we were in the kitchen at the back of the house and left without crossing our path.<\/p>\n<p>But something bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you thought Dad died here,\u201d I said, \u201cwhere did you think his body was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa\u2019s answer came too late.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich hospital?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho took him there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie, enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cNot enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa started crying.<\/p>\n<p>At least it sounded like crying. I heard a broken inhale, then another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, we genuinely believed you were gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstate papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t proof of death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, but\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant interrupted. \u201cEdward, maybe everybody needs to calm down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am calm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly you aren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s eyebrows rose.<\/p>\n<p>Grant continued. \u201cThere has obviously been a misunderstanding. Vanessa received information, we came here, we found the paperwork, and we tried to handle things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou handled things quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were trying to protect the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa said my name sharply.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me not to come. She said everything in the house belongs to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad closed his eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>When he opened them, the humor had disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell Natalie I excluded her from my will?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa sniffed. \u201cThat\u2019s what the document says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat document?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you find it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVanessa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn your office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The temperature in the kitchen seemed to drop.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s office had always been private. Even when we were children, we knew not to rummage through his desk. After Mom died, he became more particular about it because insurance records, tax files, banking statements, and estate documents were kept there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you get into the desk?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa answered softly. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t locked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>He walked away from the table.<\/p>\n<p>I followed him.<\/p>\n<p>The office door stood at the end of the hall. Dad opened it and crossed to the heavy oak desk beneath the window.<\/p>\n<p>The top drawer had a brass lock.<\/p>\n<p>Dad touched it.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Scratches marked the metal around the keyhole.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh scratches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened the drawer.<\/p>\n<p>Papers had been disturbed.<\/p>\n<p>Dad rarely misplaced a pencil. Now folders leaned at odd angles, an envelope sat upside down, and a small metal cash box had been shifted from the back of the drawer.<\/p>\n<p>His face became frighteningly still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVanessa,\u201d he said toward the phone in my hand, \u201chow did you open my desk?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you. It was open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe you forgot to lock it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re seventy-four, Dad. You forget things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence mattered.<\/p>\n<p>I knew it before I understood why.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been saying that a lot lately,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa stopped crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I forget things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI worry about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told my bank I was forgetting things too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa made a small noise.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued. \u201cThree months ago, someone at the bank called me because my daughter had asked what would be required to help manage my accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to protect you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re getting older.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI noticed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom handled a lot before she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd after she died, I handled it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot always well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s fingers curled against the desk.<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard about any of this.<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cVanessa, did you ask the bank for access to Dad\u2019s money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked a question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked several,\u201d Dad said.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa\u2019s voice sharpened. \u201cYou don\u2019t know what it\u2019s been like, Natalie. You aren\u2019t here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou get to drive in, spend a weekend with him, and leave. I\u2019m the one nearby. I\u2019m the one who has to worry about what happens if he falls or forgets medication or signs something he shouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked almost amused by the final accusation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInteresting choice of words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of answering, he reached behind several folders in the drawer.<\/p>\n<p>His hand stopped.<\/p>\n<p>He removed an empty space.<\/p>\n<p>Not an object.<\/p>\n<p>An absence.<\/p>\n<p>Dad searched again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s missing?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He checked the lower drawer, then a cabinet beside the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was in it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCopies of older estate documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa immediately said, \u201cWe didn\u2019t take anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad turned toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t ask whether you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant swore quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa said, \u201cDad, we came here because we thought you were dead. Of course we looked for the will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou looked for it before calling Natalie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe needed to know what to tell her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou needed to know what you owned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad gave a humorless smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFairness stopped being the issue when you announced my death while I was making breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned against the desk.<\/p>\n<p>Something else was bothering me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVanessa, you said the document specifically excludes me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow old is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Papers rustled.<\/p>\n<p>Grant whispered, \u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That single word sharpened every nerve in my body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy shouldn\u2019t she look?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Neither answered.<\/p>\n<p>Dad walked back toward the kitchen. I followed.<\/p>\n<p>He sat down, opened a drawer near the telephone stand, and removed a small notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChecking a date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned several pages.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened yesterday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met Harold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew Harold Pike. He had been Dad\u2019s closest friend for decades, but he was also a retired attorney who still helped Dad with legal matters.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa apparently knew exactly what the name meant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you meet Harold?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad closed the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me the date on the will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Dad repeated the question.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Grant said, \u201cFour years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you assumed a four-year-old document represented my current wishes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was in your desk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo are canceled checks from 1998.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa\u2019s frustration broke through. \u201cThen tell us whether there\u2019s another will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, there isn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I won\u2019t tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>There was something behind his anger now.<\/p>\n<p>Preparation.<\/p>\n<p>He had known something was wrong before this morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday,\u201d I said carefully, \u201cyou met Harold about Vanessa, didn\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s eyes met mine.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa stopped speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Grant stopped speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took a long breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday afternoon, I learned your sister had been talking to someone about this house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa said, \u201cDad\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot a contractor.
