not cut through thirty years.

Instead it chose my daughter.

She arrived on a Sunday carrying groceries.

I was sitting near the balcony.

She opened the door with her key because I had given both girls permission.

“Mom?”

I turned.

A woman stood in my living room.

Dark hair.

Red scarf.

Familiar sorry.”

“No.”

“I forgot you.”

“For maybe twenty seconds.”

“I asked who you were.”

“And then you who distrusted vague language.

The woman who once found her father dead.

All of it.

But I had seen the future.

A day would come when recognition might not driving.”

“Of course.”

When Sophie arrived, I was angry.

Not at her.

At the disease.

At time.

At my own brain for turning people into puzzles.

“I want to move.”

Sophie froze.

“To assisted living?”

“Memory care.”

“Now?”

“Yes.”

“Mom, one episode doesn’t mean—”

“I know.”

“You’re still managing medications.”

“I know.”

“You haven’t wandered.”

“I know.”

“You cook.”

“Badly.”

“You always cooked badly.”

“Rude.”

She sat.

“Why now?”

“Because I don’t want the first serious crisis deciding for us.”

That logic she understood.

We toured three facilities.

I hated all of them.

Then we visited one with a garden, small apartments, and staff who spoke to residents instead of their adult children.

That mattered.

The director asked me what I wanted.

Not Sophie.

Me.

“A door I can close.”

“Yes.”

“My own books.”

“Yes.”

“No television in common areas blasting all day.”

“We can’t promise that.”

“Honest.”

She smiled.

“What else?”

“Staff who don’t correct me every time I’m wrong.”

The director became serious.

“We generally use validation and redirection unless a factual correction matters for safety.”

Good.

I moved the following month.

Voluntarily.

We made sure everyone knew that.

Not because I needed praise.

Because I wanted the record clear in case later I accused my daughters of forcing me.

That possibility was real.

I wrote myself a letter.

Dear Isabelle,

You chose this place.

Sophie and Ruby did not force you.

You toured it twice.

You liked the garden.

You were scared.

You chose it anyway.

I signed and dated it.

Ruby notarized it as a joke.

Then decided that was inappropriate.

Then notarized it anyway because, as she said, “future you may demand evidence.”

Future me probably would.

The first month was miserable.

I hated scheduled meals.

I hated staff knocking.

I hated hearing other residents call for people who had been dead for years.

One man asked every afternoon when the bus to Chicago arrived.

A nurse always told him, “Not yet.”

Never that no bus existed.

At first I found that dishonest.

Then I saw his face relax.

Truth had always mattered to me.

Now I was learning that truth could have forms.

Factual truth.

Emotional truth.

Safety truth.

The man was not trying to obtain accurate transportation information.

He was trying to go somewhere his mind identified as home.

“Not yet” gave him ten minutes of peace.

I thought about my instructions to Sophie.

Ask why I’m asking.

Good rule.

My memory declined unevenly.

Some mornings I could explain the entire Saint Matthew investigation in order.

Other mornings I forgot Emily’s last name.

Once I introduced Emily as my cousin.

She laughed.

“Close enough.”

Technically, she was my cousin.

That helped.

I forgot Marcus more often.

He accepted this with suspicious delight.

“You never liked me.”

“That’s not true.”

“Prove it.”

“I let you marry Emily.”

He laughed.

“You did not have approval rights.”

“Apparently I forgot.”

The family learned to stop testing me.

That was important.

At first Ruby asked casual questions.

“What did we eat yesterday?”

“Who visited?”

“Remember where Sophie traveled?”

I finally snapped.

“Stop turning lunch into a neurological exam.”

She went pale.

“You’re right.”

After that, she stopped.

If I remembered, good.

If not, life continued.

Anna visited every Wednesday.

Sometimes I knew her immediately.

Sometimes I thought she was Sophie.

She never corrected me unless it mattered.

One afternoon I called her Sophie for twenty minutes.

We discussed Anna’s job.

Her daughter Elise.

Her divorce.

Everything.

At the end I said, “You’re not Sophie.”

“No.”

“Anna.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You seemed happy.”

“That’s dangerous logic.”

She smiled.

“Maybe.”

I thought.

“Was anything we said dependent on who you were?”

“No.”

“Then fine.”

That became another principle.

Correct the fact if the fact changes the choice.

Otherwise, maybe let the mind rest.

The hardest day came when I asked Sophie whether Ruby had survived childhood.

Sophie was sitting beside my bed.

I had been feverish from a urinary infection, which worsened the confusion.

“Where’s the other girl?”

“What other girl?”

“Your sister.”

Sophie understood.

“Ruby?”

“Yes.”

I searched her face.

“She’s alive?”

Sophie’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“She’s at work.”

Relief moved through me so powerfully that I cried.

“I thought something happened.”

“No.”

“Did Graham take her?”

Sophie went still.

I had crossed decades in one sentence.

“No.”

“Where is Graham?”

She hesitated.

I saw it.

Even confused, I saw it.

Then I asked, “He’s dead, isn’t he?”

“Yes.”

The grief hit fresh.

Not thirty years old.

Now.

I covered my face.

Sophie held me while I cried for a man I had already buried.

Later, she called Ruby.

“I told her.”

“You had to.”

“She asked.”

“Was it wrong?”

“No.”

“She lost him again.”

Ruby’s voice broke.

“That’s what Mom wanted us to avoid.”

Sophie cried harder.

But she had followed my instruction.

If I remembered enough to ask directly, tell the truth.

The problem was that I had not anticipated how painful truth would feel when memory could not cushion it with time.

The next morning I did not remember the conversation.

Sophie did.

Caregiving was becoming the place where memory lived outside me.

That burden frightened me.

During a lucid afternoon, I told both girls.

“You’re carrying things I won’t remember.”

Ruby looked at me.

“That’s okay.”

“No. It’s not automatically okay.”

“What do you want us to do?”

“Don’t make my forgotten pain your obligation to preserve.”

Sophie frowned.

“Explain.”

“If I say something cruel and then forget, you’re allowed to still be hurt.”

They listened.

“But you don’t have to keep reminding me just so I suffer proportionately.”

Ruby laughed sadly.

“That sounds like a legal doctrine.”

“Write it down.”

She did.

I continued.

“If I forget Graham’s worst years, you don’t need to teach them back to me.”

Sophie’s face changed.

“What if you idealize him?”

“Let me.”

“Really?”

“If it isn’t hurting anyone.”

That was difficult.

For years accuracy had protected us.

Now accuracy could become cruelty when forced onto a mind losing context.

“I spent enough years knowing what happened.”

I looked at both daughters.

“If one day all I remember is that your father made terrible pancakes, let me keep that.”

Sophie began crying.

Ruby looked away.

I understood why.

They had fought so hard to reclaim the whole story.

Now I was asking permission to lose parts of it.

But losing was not erasing.

They remembered.

Documents existed.

The truth remained.

It no longer required residence inside every cell of my failing brain.

Months later, I stopped recognizing Ruby consistently.

But I knew how I felt when she entered.

Safe.

Annoyed.

Loved.

She once asked, “Do you know who I am?”

Then immediately covered her mouth.

We had agreed not to test.

I looked at her.

“You’re trouble.”

She laughed.

“That’s accurate.”

I held out my hand.

She took it.

Names were beginning to loosen.

Roles too.

Emotion remained longer.

Maybe that was what frightened people about memory loss.

They imagined love disappearing when recognition did.

For me, the opposite often happened.

Recognition thinned.

Love became simpler.

A face entered.

My body relaxed.

That was enough information.

Somewhere beneath language, I still knew who belonged.

Click here to continue reading: PART 27: When I No Longer Knew the Story of Saint Matthew,
