one of the sharpest tools in the family.<\/p>\n<p>Graham\u2019s condition remained stable for two years.<\/p>\n<p>Then it worsened.<\/p>\n<p>Shortness of instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Graham showed them where every account was.<\/p>\n<p>Who had authority.<\/p>\n<p>What he wanted medically.<\/p>\n<p>What he did not.<\/p>\n<p>Ruby reviewed the mortality.<\/p>\n<p>Then he handed them each a letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I learned something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLetters are useless if they arrive too late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I did not move.<\/p>\n<p>The letters were short.<\/p>\n<p>No apology inventory.<\/p>\n<p>No request for absolution.<\/p>\n<p>To Ruby, he wrote that her ability to question him without abandoning him taught him what accountability felt account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo brother we don\u2019t know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease don\u2019t tempt history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruby hugged him.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie waited.<\/p>\n<p>Then hugged him too.<\/p>\n<p>Not because illness required it.<\/p>\n<p>Because she chose to.<\/p>\n<p>Later, in the parking lot, Sophie said, \u201cThat felt different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHugging him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t feel like he needed something from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was
