go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened despite the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith me in the I say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>No explanation could make the decision Margaret\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>Door locked.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah asleep.<\/p>\n<p>The folded note.<\/p>\n<p>She isn&#39;t who she says she is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked were already nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret opened the door and looked between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou two look like you\u2019ve been to a funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoute 35,\u201d Sarah said.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret understood immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She let us in.<\/p>\n<p>The dining room was still there.<\/p>\n<p>Same table.<\/p>\n<p>Different curtains.<\/p>\n<p>I stood near the chair where I had sat with the note hidden in my pocket.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were strange that night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you two were fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were. I just didn\u2019t know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah looked around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took a call in the other room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarton,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was Barton?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot a person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarton was an account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll these years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought Barton was some criminal associate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a holding company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told your mother you had a client call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember thinking pharmaceutical marketing sounded dull.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was supposed to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongratulations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then Margaret looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do with the note?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTore it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmediately?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter saving the number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our overnight bag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept the pieces?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the first secret I deliberately kept from you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She absorbed that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI deserved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou deserved investigation. You didn\u2019t deserve every bad thing automatically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat distinction matters to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise justice becomes revenge.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise Marcus wins his oldest argument.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone eventually becomes what fear requires.<\/p>\n<p>We stayed for lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret made sandwiches.<\/p>\n<p>No one discussed Harbor for nearly an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Then she disappeared upstairs and returned carrying a small cardboard box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found this after everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRelax.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Old family photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Receipts.<\/p>\n<p>Birthday cards.<\/p>\n<p>A church program.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing criminal.<\/p>\n<p>Then she handed me an envelope.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written on it.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>She looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did you write this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The envelope had never been sealed.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret said, \u201cIt was in the guest-room drawer after that weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Route 35 weekend.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was one sheet.<\/p>\n<p>David,<\/p>\n<p>If I tell you we need to leave, please trust me long enough to come with me. I know I\u2019m asking too much. There are things I should have told you years ago. I thought keeping them from you kept you outside them.
